Skala or Katelios without a car.

We are looking at accommodation in Skala and Katelios. We have visited several Greek islands and the mainland (Parga) but having never been to Cephalonia before we would like some advice please.

We are in our early 60's and are quite happy sitting by a pool or on the beach. We like to relax with the option of 3 or 4 excursions and/or boat trips during a fortnight. We like to have a stroll in the evenings and enjoy a meal at a local taverna followed by a few drinks. We prefer not to hire a car and would like to know if excursions run from these resorts, also which resort would suit us better.

Any information would be appreciated.

We spent 2 weeks in Skala in June this year without a car and had a wonderful holiday, we enjoyed days on the beach or by the pool at our hotel and the village was nice to stroll around on an evening with plenty of places to eat & drink . we booked an island tour with Pane travel and a trip to Ithaca with captain vangelis - the boat leaves from Skala beach opposite the Anassa hotel. There were other excursions that looked good as well and the panel tour guide Esme was superb . We had a couple of strolls around the area but as they were having a heatwave in midJune the sun lounger and a book was pretty appealing !

We had a lovely relaxed time and would return to the same place without hesitation .

either places good to stroll around . You can do trips from botha s well Capt. Vengalias will transport you over to skala for a boat trip. More tavernas on beach front of Katelios and sandy beaches near by as well.

Either fine. Skala bigger and therefore more tavernas but there are enough in Katelios. Do not try to rely on buses in either resort.

Katelios if you like eating fish. It's a quiet resort with 2 good Hotels Utopia and Magnolia. There is a local tour operator.

Skala is bigger and more commercialised but also has good Hotels.

I have stayed in both and prefer Katelios.

Would recommend the Magnolia in Katelios, don't take the hb as there are plenty of tavernas to choose from although the hotel does good meals so it is worth eating there sometimes. Read reviews of hotel to get a better idea. Panem has an office in Katelios offering about 6 or so different excursions, see their web site for more info. Recommend the trip to Ithaca, by coach. Capt Vangelis also has an office selling boat trips. You can also hire a small boat to explore the coast yourself. Beach is about 10 to 15 mins stroll away, if you take the lane opposite the hotel it brings you out near Dreams bar and the beach is very good there and there are sun beds. An even better beach is at Kaminia, another 20 mins or so scramble across the headland. A water taxi runs between Scala and Katelios in high season. The are 1 or 2 (literally) buses that run between Argostoli, Scala and Katelios but not very practical for return journeys but feasible one way bus,one way taxi. I thinkmitbwas 15€ from Scala to Katelios and about 45€ from Argostoli. Having said you don't want to hire a car the roads in Kefalonia are very quiet, very twisty and steep at times not a problem, even Arostoli was ok, especially if you drive along side the lagoon and park anywhere before you get to the bridge avoiding the town centre and one way system. Venus car hire in Katelios is excellent.

Hope this helps. We've been to Katelios twice now and have loved it (and the Magnolia) and plan to go back sometime probably a week at Mag and a week in Fiscardo.

Thank you for your replies. We have looked at Magnolia Resort and Melidron Hotel in Skala but have still not decided which to go for.

At least we know excursions are available from both resorts and the boat trips sound fabulous. We do prefer small traditional Greek resorts and wonder whether Skala may be too commercialised?

Decisions to be made soon. Thanks again for the advice.
