Where to go?

We are off a cruise on a Saturday in late December and wondered which of the places we shouldn't miss that are being offered by the cruise line as excursions: Puerto Mogan, Gran Canaria, Maspalomas or Las Palmas ... and whichever one you select, we would want to go to independent of the cruise line and wonder how to get there from the ship. Thank you.

If I were you I'de stay and enjoy the city on your own. A taxi can easily be caught from your ship and is very inexpensive. Head across to Las Canteras the city's lovely beach and stroll along the paseo enjoying a coffee before choosing a place for lunch. Doing this independantly takes away the worry of getting back in time as it's such a short distance from the cruise ship berths. There are plent of taxi's to hail in the streets behind the beach for your return. Other ideas to see the city here below including the tourist hop on hop off bus service.

Maspalomas and Mogan are tourist resorts so either stick to Las Palmas or head up into the mountains. If you stay in Las Palmas you don't need to do an organized tour, although there are some fun bike tours. To see the mountains and the forests then a bus tour is probably the best option.

Don't miss Vegueta in Las Palmas: It's the historical district and is a all cobbled streets and wooden balconies.

Just to clarify Anfi beach is down in the South of the island and is indeed lovely, but it's knowhere near Las Palmas City. The first picture shown in the link above is Anfi beach not Amadores as titled underneath, Amadores too is a lovely location and is located about 6 kilometres away from Anfi. Both locations are man made, Anfi has powdery white sand whilst Amadores has a gritty white sandlike covering.

Ha, 500 reads and nobody else had spotted that! Thanks!

The cruise ships dock in Las Palmas, so to me it makes sense to spend our time in the city, rather than on buses getting to and from the south.
