Half-day Macau trip from Hongkong>>>is this possible?

Hi all,

I'm going to Hong Kong by December 7 (staying for 4days). I'm all set for all the places that I wana to visit in HongKong --BUT, I keep thinking of doing a side trip to Macau. I got more excited to see that there is but MaCAO DRAGON has a promotional ticket offer, very cheap fares (2way - showing on their website as HK$128).

I plan to squeeze in a halfday (after lunch, during Day1) side trip to Macau (note: I'm booked for Disney and Oceanpark on the other dates, that's why I can only do halfday Macau). I hope you can help me with some of my questions:

1. Any feedback re: Macao Dragon re their service? I'm just worried and maybe a bit in disbelief that their rates are cheap. IS there like a "catch" to this?

2. Can you share some more details about the free hotel shuttle services? I mean, if I go on a Tues, are there free shuttle services from Taipa Terminal? Is there a free shuttle going to the Senado?

3. Do you think I can roam around Macau - just half day? (12nn-5pm)

----- I've done some research and I saw some tourist spots that I want to visit:

*a few of casinos (The Venetian Macao, Grand Lisbon, Wynn).

*Senado Square, Ruins of St Paul, the Macau Tower

Crazy huh, for a half day tour --- I really wana go to Macau!!!

Can you suggest a Macau half-day tour itinerary, which places to visit?

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!

Jetfoil which is the main service to Macau charges HK 138. I think for two roundtrip its was US$ 60 during the week. The Jetfoil takes about 45-55 minutes from the terminal on Hong Kong Island. It also has a website. Book in advance because if you just turn up you will have to go standby and if your return is after 6PM? you may have to pay more. We booked the day before. Also Macau has it own currency.

The ferries run until late evening back to Hong Kong. So I would suggest you do Senado Square ruins of St Paul first and then walk over to Lisboa, Wyn etc. The way to do the free shuttle is to just pretend you are going to Lisboa Casino. You will be able to do Senado etc, but probably not the other areas. Forget Fisherman's Wharf because most of the shops and restaurants are closed.

For a great walking tour and what to see go to Frommers.com a print the walk tour of Macau. It has great directions.

It takes 1hour ferry to get to macau. Also there are immigration ,disembarkation, wait for ferry...etc which takes approx another hour. So you need to factor in another 4 hours realistically for a return trip. You Want to do 12-5 in macau, u need to book the 1030 ferry and be at ferry terminal by 1000 with prebooked tickets. If you leave your hotel at 12, you will reach ferry terminal at 1230' catch the 1300 ferry, arrive around 1400 and clear the terminal around 1415 to 1430. Then by the time you catch transpot to your first site it will be 1500. Frankly i dont think half day is enough.

The macau dragon promo is for dec only and the midday departures are 1130 and 1415. The return is 1600 and 1700. If u take the 1130 boat you will arrive your first site at 1300. If you take the 1700 return you hv to leave the last site at about 1600, grab a cab and get back to the terminal. So that gives you 3 hours. Only you can decide if its worth it.

Neither of the previous posters has mentioned what I consider to be the main "catch" with the Macao Dragon service: that it lands at the Taipa ferry terminal rather than the main Macau ferry terminal - the Taipa terminal is really only convenient if you are planning to visit Cotai (as there are some shuttle services). If you are planning to visit downtown Macau (the historic areas) you will also have to factor in extra transport time between Taipa and Macau peninsula and back again.

Thank you Sandie, maic and oisaan!

I guess visiting Macau half day would only be stressful, but If I find a good deal for ferry tickets, I most likely will rearrange my HK itinerary to visit Macau.

Do you know of any other ferry service that offers cheap 2way tickets?

Sorry, I don't think there are any other cheap tickets - Macao Dragon is the "new kid on the block" and is trying to get hold of a good market share.

But remember that what you save on tickets by travelling on the cheap ferry you will probably lose on taxi fares getting to and from their more remote ferry pier.

I have done the brief visit to Macau. I would like to emphasaize the wait to clear HK customs and then the wait at Macau immigration can be lengthy.

I recall going early in the morning and buying the ticket and thinking I did not know if I would make it on. Allow for lots of time on the Hong Kong end

Hi Bluebluey1,

If you take the ferry to Cotai, you can take the Wynn hotel bus to the Wynn hotel. From there you can make your way to Senado Square and take photos of the Lisboa and Grand Lisboa hotels along the way.

On your way back you can take the same Wynn shuttle.

If you re-organize your HK trip to have more time, then you can take instead the Venetian Shuttle to Venetian. After Venetian, you can take the Venetian shuttle to the main ferry terminal, and take a Lisboa bus to Lisboa, and walk to Senado square from the Lisboa. On your return, take the Wynn shuttle back to Taipa
