Is our budget enough??

Hi everyone,

After reading through some of the forum posts, we've started to worry!

We have a budget set at e150 per day. There are four of us: 2 adults 2 kids (11 and 12). We like to eat out most nights but during the day just settle for snacks and the occasional beer at he bar, and sometimes have a breakfast depending on the need for a hangover cure! In the evening we will usually have a couple of starters to share, a main each (traditionally greek obviously), dessert for the kids, half a carafe of wine, water and a beer then onto a cocktail bar. This isn't every evening as some days we like to have a day out and then relax at night in the hotel bar.

We went to Zante last year and according to some posts on here, Rhodes seems a lot more expensive. So we were wondering... Do you think e150 is enough per day?

P.S. We don't like the idea of the set menu places.

Hi there

We have just returned from Pefkos (early hours this morning). We went AI as a couple were on a mega tight budget but we ate out 3/4 lunchtimes and 3 times in the evening. We were really surprised at how cheap it was and to be honest, if we had known, would have gone self catering. We didn't have set menu's at any time but a couple of people we got chatting to had eaten them and said they were fine. Most lunchtime snacks were well under 5 euros, soft drinks seemed to be more than the food!! There are some lovely restuarants and Tavernas down the main drag to the beach, they are all in competition with each other so shop around. The most expensive meal we had (five of us) was at Enigma, 3 starters, 5 mains, wine, water and diet cokes came to 83 euros, we thought that was good as we were all guessing it to be about 140 euros!! Well worth it but it was a birthday meal so wouldn't have done that every night. I don't think you should worry about having enough 150 sounds fine to me, at the end of the day you can eat cheaply or expensive but on the whole it is much cheaper than here. We also had a hangover breakfast LOL, cost us 3.50 each that was for the full works, toast and coffee and it worked wonders!!! Again, shop around, we ate ours in a taverna on the left hand side down towards the main beach, was really lovely, sorry can't remember the name as wasn't really with it that morning!!

Just to warn you the tempreture in Pefkos is blisteringly hot at the moment even the locals were suffering , the first couple of days were 54 and 48!! But it is a lovely place and somewhere we will be returning to. Up the sun screen factor as a couple of us got burnt and we were careful. Oh and take some old flip flops/jelly shoes to get Into the sea as there are large stones/rocks, we didn't know about this and it did make getting in and out a tad un-elegant!!

Anyway, hope this helps, have a great holiday :-))

We returned from Pefkos last weekend, we budgeted 100 euros per day and added a bit more for car hire, water park etc, this was more than adequate for 2 adults and 1 teenager, I would say with your budget you may well bring some money home.

We at at Anixis, shared starters, 6 main courses, coffees and 2 litres of house wine was around 75 euros for six of us. There are many places where you can eat in this style for that kind of money give or take a euro or two. The set menu places can be a bit of a false economy as they they charge quite a lot for drinks.

150 euros a day, maybe a bit on the tight side , depending on extras like trips , car hire , or air con. It will be do able depending on choice of meals and where you eat, some places cost more than others, Three we go to that are good and relativley cheap are annexis coralli and nickolas taverna, we dont do the 8 euro 3 course places but may be a option for a night if your bugdet is getting tight. We went to Kalamaki in may and found the drinks there cheaper than Pefkos, ie cocktails in Kalamaki 3- 5 euros in Pefkos 5- 6 euros, We liked Kalamaki and will return but Pefkos is our second home, you will have a great time, and as the advert goes theres always mastercard.

' The set menue places can be a bit of a false economy as they charge quite a lot for drinks '

We had been on Rhodes on holiday for 19 years & have now lived on Rhodes for over 3 years

We have never found drinks prices any different in set menue tavernas

In some of these places though, it the quality / quantity of food that disappoints

Hi Trevor,

I based my statement on Zorbas half litre of wine 7 euros, Anixis 1 litre of wine 6 euros, ate at Zorbas once and didn't thimk it was too bad.

We stayed in pefkos last August. 2 adults & 2 children (8 & 6) we only ate out in the evening, brekkie & lunch in the apartment almost every day. Kids shared main meals, don't do kids meals (everything with chips) we took €1400 which wasn't enough! Had to change another £100. Didn't stay out drinking til early hours due to the age of the kids. If we go again we would go with €150 at least a day.

The best value restaurant we found was Anixis, great food and atmosphere, always full. Wished we'd tried it earlier in the holiday. Alexandras was cheap too for gyros, busy with locals picking up takeaways.

We are two adults that like to eat out and we also like a drink or two or three LOL Well we usually have fruit & yoghurt on the balcony for breakfast, lunch is if we are around the pool we will have cheese & crusty bread etc on the balcony but if we are out we will buy lunch (share a Greek salad & maybe Mousaka - Pizza etc) then we go for a nice meal in the evening we usually work on 100 euro s per day and that's not including car hire, trips etc. We do stay in Lindos which is more expensive than most. - Just been to Skiathos and I must admit it was not as expensive as Lindos.

Thankyou everyone!

We have a seperate fund for air con and car hire (although, being the only driver in our party, I'm a bit nervous about driving abroad so we may only use the local bus). Your replies have been really helpful.

My children are of the age were we are unsure of ordering kids meals or a smaller adults portion. They both love Greek food so is there anywhere that could cater for them?

@fish062 'Just to warn you the tempreture in Pefkos is blisteringly hot at the moment even the locals were suffering , the first couple of days were 54 and 48!!' That is HOT!!!!!!!!!

We're all glued to this site at the moment, 2 weeks to go!!!! :)

We asked a few times for smaller portions, always willing to oblige. Even though they weren't much smaller in size when they came!!! Most of the time the kids shared and had a greek salad with it and most of the time that was enough!
