Te Anau In July

It's the only time of year we can get there. Can you suggest what we can see from a natural beauty perspective I. The middle of winter? I there cross country skiing? Trails are snow packed?

There is no cross country skiing in Te Anau. The only place you can do that is at the Snow farm near wanaka.

The mountain passes will have snow, but the Te Anau township itself and the walks at that elevation around it are very unlikely to have snow. You could certainly do a day walk on a section of the Kepler Track without being affected by snow. If you could manage the walk to Luxmore Hut, you would have stunning views of (probably) snow capped mountains around you.

Loads of walking tracks in/around Te Anau which can be accessed year round.

The Milford Road, between Te Anau and Milford Sound is walking nirvana, and assuming the road is open (it does close occasionally in the winter months due to poor weather) you'll be spoiled for choice.

Milford and Doubtful Sound cruises also operate year round, albeit on reduced schedules.

Don't miss Ata Whenua in Te Anau.

Winter and spring is my favorite time to visit the SI.
