Christmas Travel: Public, Or Private Ferry?

Usually we go to Anguilla in May, which is wonderfully sleepy and easy. We always take the public ferry.

This year I'm having a big birthday and we'll be celebrating on Anguilla btwn Christmas and New Year's.

Any tips about ferries that time of year? Should we go private or public? How much time should we allow for transit? Is traffic crazy on SXM and AXA?

All advice is welcome -- including anything else we should know when traveling that time of year.

Thanks!

Xmas-New Year is of course the peak season for tourists. Look at the dates that the "Holiday" prices apply for the villas and you will get a good impression when things are busiest. Of course, Anguilla is never really that busy anyway compared to many other islands.

It all depends on the actual day and time of arrival. Lots of people from Anguilla go shopping in St Martin before the holidays, so the public ferry can get busy. This is especially noticeable on Saturday for the last ferries, as people try to make as much use of the shopping day as possible.

Still, there should be enough capacity on the public ferries for everyone, as long as you don't arrive just minutes before the ferry departs.

With lots of shoppers and lots of shopping to declare, Blowing Point can be very crowded and wait times can be long. However, you can get caught up in that using the airport shuttle or even private charters, as it all depends on your arrival time relative to the arrival of a full public ferry. Only flying to AXA will get you around the immigration and customs waits at Blowing Point. AXA airport is so much better in that respect.

Make sure you book your rental car early!

Thanks, this is really useful. We're committed to flying into SXM, and it sounds like Blowing Point will be packed regardless.

Flight/hotel/car are already booked. Didn't want to get shut out of any of that :-)

You can fly SXM-AXA on Anguilla Air Service (AAS) for about $100 pp. Quick and easy (but not the cheapest) and definitely the most comfortable if the schedule works out.

Just watch your luggage allowance on these small planes.

Yes! Anguilla Air Service, simply the best!

Smokeys for New Years Eve - they always get good reviews for their NY Eve parties.

Have a blast, I would love to go at that time of year, it would be wonderful to see the island's Christmas decorations.

Perfect spots for a New Year's Eve dinner -- Mangos or Straw Hat -- if you are staying on the West end.
