renting a car

does anyone have any advise on whether to rent a car or not. WE are going to Marigot Bay in Feb for 2 weeks and wonder if it is worth renting a car or taking cabs. Andy advise??

It depends how widely you plan to travel: if only a couple of short trips then get cabs. If you'll be going long or frequent trips then a car will be more worthwhile.

Also the roads can be quite hair-raising, if you're not used to driving on narrow windy roads, or not comfortable with driving on the left.

Taxis are not cheap. One trip to anywhere would cover the cost of a rental car for a day.

We have just returned from 8 nights in Marigot. Taxis and water taxis would be very expensive if you choose to leave the resort regularly, for example to eat out in different areas - but we found that the cost for two of us to take a private comprehensive taxi tour in a large modern airconditioned van with excellent safe driver - one full day south, and one part day north sigtseeing was OK ($140 south / $100 north). Taxi prices are regulated - and it doesn't seem to matter how long you have the taxi - only your eventual destination. When we had a taxi, we utilised it fully, which kept overall costs sensible.

We were impressed with our local taxi and water taxi drivers in Marigot, who were readily available, flexible, and accomodating.

St Lucia transportation is certainly not cheap, but the island is wonderful, and the roads / terrain not great. A driver is more relaxing - not sure we would have wished to drive ourselves at night.

Whole days in Marigot can be very pleasant, and there a few eating options in the bay.

You probably won't need to hire a car for all of your two weeks, but think about hiring for a few days at the end to do a couple of longer trips at your leisure and, in particular, to drive yourselves back to the airport, and so save the taxi fare.

When staying in Marigot Bay, we use Rent-a-ride, who have an office in the Marina Village, and have always looked after us well and given us a good deal. You can hand the car over to them at the airport.

Apart from that, take Gaspari's advice and use the local taxis and water taxis, or stick around the Bay.
