vacation October 17 up to 23

Hello,

We a family of two adults and 3 children ( 11 - 8 and 7 years) have the intention to spent our vacation at Trecco Bay holiday park.

Our week vacation is a combination of seeing things in the area maximum distance approx one hour by car.

Who can give us advice about the things to see and do in this area.

-I am thinking about scenic roads or walks.

- Things to see and do with children.

- Interesting places to be visit can be for example a pittoresque village or fishing village

All other ideas are welcome and I know it is only a week but we would like to show our children as well a little of the history and culture of the area were we spent our holiday.

I'm from south Wales, but not from the Porthcawl area. Hopefully someone who knows the immediate area better will respond to your query.

You shouldn't miss a trip to Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. Around half an hour by car from Porthcawl. Visit Cardiff Castle and then move on to the Cardiff Bay area. A visit to Techniquest is a must for your children. It's a "hands-on" science experience for youngsters. That sounds boring, but its great fun for them. You could follow this up with an ice cream at Cadwalladers ice cream parlour and a visit to the white clapboard Norwegian Church ( a five minute walk away ) which is associated with children's author Roald Dahl. Also at the Bay is the Red Dragon Centre where you can find ten pin bowling, a cinema, and a cool Dr Who exhibition.

To learn more about the history of the area (Porthcawl was the holiday resort of miners and their families from the south Wales valleys) visit the National Mining Museum of Wales at Blaenavon or the Rhondda Heritage Park at Trehafod, Pontypridd. Both will give your family a good idea of what like was life for working miners. For an understanding of the social life of the ares visit the splendid St Fagans outdoors museum (free entry).

Finally, for an intersting drive take the A470 to Brecon. This takes you through the Brecon Beacons national park.

Good luck with your holiday.

Good suggestions above. You might enjoy Dan yr Ogof caves - showcaves.co.uk for more info. You can combine them with a walk in the Brecon Beacons.

Hello hama.... if you want to send your address to the tourism unit on tourism@bridgend.gov.uk they will send you a brochure with lists of things to do and see. They have booklets also on activities, days out, country parks, walks, fascinating towns, legendary villages etc. etc.

visit www.visitbridgend.com for all the info on the area.

All the other suggestions given are also perfectly valid. Porthcawl is only 20 miles from Cardiff and about 25 miles from Swansea and 26 miles from the Brecon Beacon so its a great base to be in. Trecco Bay has lots of things going on while there so you might not even got beyond the gates!!

Whatever have a great time.
