Many thanks for replies. I did find "the walk" in the Yorkshire visitors guide, but was wandering how long it took. As we normally "stroll/walk" at about 2 1/2 miles an hour we can work it out. Maybe must just try and walk a bit quicker as we will only have about 4 hours there :-) i.e. a return walk

You could get the Airedale Shuttle bus back to Saltaire if you need to - runs every 10 mins during the week - or return to Bingley Statio & get train

JoegBradford, many thanks for the info on the Shuttle Bus - is it a "council" run bus i.e. can one use a bus pass??

I'd treat yourself to a train or bus to Bingley. The locks are about a 10 minute stroll from the railway station then walk back to Shipley (rather than walking both ways) which will leave a little extra time to look around Salts Mill and Saltaire

No buses are actually run by Councils now in this area - its run by the excellent local bus operator Keighley & District and yes you can use you pass on it. Nice buses too with leather seats & tinted windows & very clean - the trains are very good too but if you have a pass may as well use the bus :-)

Spending half a day in the area before flying out from Bradford the following day. Would you recommend Shipley or Yeadon as a base for the evening to do some exploration on foot during the day?

Shipley would be better imho. Better choice of pubs and restaurants, and you have the World Heritage Site of Saltaire on your doorstep. You can walk here from Shipley along the canal in about 15 minutes. Saltaire itself would warrant a day on its own.
