Travellers cheques can rarely be changed these days. Spanish banks won't touch them. Personally find a travel card useful.

Travellers cheques are disappearing and will soon be as extinct as the Dodo.

Have a look at the Caxton fx euro card. It`s a VISA card and can be used at any ATM or restaurant / hotel that accept VISA. without any charges or fees.

Best to take a prepaid card but some cash as well. The shopping bar only takes cash and many places have a minimum spend before you can use the card.

We took a mixture of a travelex card and cash. Most places take cards these days but as you say some don't especially if a little more remote.

We just kept a track of what we spent on the card and used the wifi in the villa to check online what our balance was. Worked well for us.
