São Luis has a crumbling but charming historic district called Reviver where you can see the traditional tile work on the building fronts. Raposa a is a fishing neighborhood with houses on stilts and lots of shops full of lace and crochet, with women demonstrating lacemaking. You can also take a boat over to Alcantara, a slave built village with ruins and lovely pastel houses. Look for the hot pink birds in the swamps nearby as the boat passes. While in the area, you should spend a couple of days in the Parquet Lencois to see the lakes in the dunes.

The weather is hot and very humid.

Generally women dress to the teeth for weddings.

The city is pretty safe, but the usual vigilance is needed.

There are ATMs to withdraw cash in the city.

It will be very hot and no one will be wearing shorts. Maybe that's the origin of the tradition of cutting up the groom's tie to sell.

In general, Brazilian hotels do not conform to a US or EU star system.
