Buses from Cala N Porter to a hypermarket

We're going to Cala N Porter for 2 weeks self catering in June - this will be our 1st visit to Menorca. Does anyone know if there's a bus from Cala N Porter to a hypermarket? - we're not planning on hiring a car. I've read there are small supermarkets in Cala N Porter and there's an out of town area with large supermarkets/hypermarket. We are hoping to do a big shop there and wondered if there's a bus or if we need to hire a taxi. Is there a bakery/bread shop in Cala N Porter? Also - does anyone know how big the taxis are and which company is good? - we need to hire one from the airport to our accommodation. We are a family of 4 and will have 2 large suitcases and 4 cabin bags - I was wondering if it will fit in the taxi.

The supermarkets in Cala en porter ( three ) are perfectly big enough/choice for a big shop-you can also get on the bus to Spar at Sant Climent 10min for cheaper prices, local butchers, menorca food specialities at Can Bernat delicatessen and good food at Es Casino Bar Restaurant. There are plenty of places in CnP to get fresh bread There is only one taxi company, who if you ask will call up a large enough taxi.

You will love it! Jen X

Thank you for you reply - I was thinking that the supermarkets in CnP will be small and expensive. Also do you have the name of the taxi company? Thanks.

Use the taxis from the rank. If you find a taxi driver you like ask for his personal card. You will find that certain supermarkets are cheaper, e.g. lidl, Mercadona but it does rather depend on what you buy. Some people like Eroski, I prefer Binipreu but most things can be obtained within resort. Spar in San Clemente has been serving English customers for years and has some imported English goods. There is a chocolate shop run by English people nearby. The airport bus service stops near the main big supermarkets om its way to Mahon. Runs about every half hour.

The taxi is the licensed Mahon taxis ( not private firms like in uk ) Outside Terminal

The CnP Supermarket prices are more expensive(10-20% ) /less choice ( they are BIG for a Menorcan resort ) but the alternative taxi return price/convenience does not outway. Try the buses anyway good way to see things and are cheap!

Menorca is ALL small scale! :-)

PS the danger with Binipreuxis you might get distracted by the clothes department upstairs( and destroy the budgeting ! ) while the Men folk will enjoy the nice cafe downstairs ;-)

I've always found the supermarket's in Cala'n Porter fine for everything we need as a family and not much more expensive than the out of town places, especially once you add in travelling costs and time it takes. I would however echo the comments sand stroller made about getting the bus to san climente and using their supermarket. It has an excellent deli counter for good meat (spanish ham especially) and cheese and combine it with a vist to the casino restaurant (which has nothing to do with gambling/casinos as we know it to my knowledge) which is probably one of our favourite places for breakfast, lunch or dinner in menorca.

Thank you for the info - we've been driving to Costa Azahar & Costa Brava for the last few years, so have had the luxury of stocking up on supplies from Carrefour & similar places - obviously a lot cheaper!

Sandstroller - is Binipreuxis on the out of town site?

Captaintefal - I've looked at Spar at San Clemente on google earth & it doesn't look very big.

Do you know how easy it is to get to different beaches by bus from Cala n Porter?

Thanks.

Sant Climent SPAR is excellent, the in house butchers is also very good. You would be able to stock up on all essential (and non-essential!) items there. The only thing you will not be able to get is fresh fish.

BiniPreu supermarket is on the mahon industrial estate, situated on the outskirts of town, close to the airport. I find this supermarket to be on the expensive side. Mercadona, just down the road, is cheaper and by far now the most popular supermarket with us locals. I would taxi it there and back.

It´s easy to get a bus into Mahon, however, linking the buses up to get to other places and then get back to mahon in time for a return bus to CPorter can be very difficult. If you want to see the island, would you not consider renting a car for a day or two? You could get one on the first day (even pick one up from the airport), get your shopping done, then the next day explore the lovely beaches and return it that evening? Autos Amigo are based in CPorter http://www.menorcacarhire.com/ and offer good rates.

Hi Samantha,

As Raff says it is not possible to get a direct bus to anywhere except Mahon and Ciutadella. Most places connect with Mahon. However it is easy to get a connection to Binibequer and also to Es Castell and both are definitely worth a visit.

We walked to Son Bou on the Cami Cavalls, which is a lovely walk but depends on the age of the children and if they like walking! The walk starts behind the beach and takes about 2 hours. You can also get a connection in Mahon for the bus to Son Bou but it seems to take a long time.

There is a shorter walk to Calas Coves which only takes 30 mins and starts behind the football pitch. Follow the road past Spar and the Village store and turn left to Zona Sportivo(sp). At the end of that road turn left and at the bottom of the road is a gate. Follow the posts to Calas Coves. It is lovely and well worth a visit.

As others have said the Spar and Village Store and good and have everything you need without being expensive.

Hi Samantha,

The Spar in San Climente isn't that big, the one in Cala'n Porter is actually bigger. That said it's bigger than it looks on Google Earth and in all my 30 odd years of going to Menorca i've probably only been to the bigger supermarkets 2 or 3 times. I'd agree with what Raff said and suggest hiring a car, even if it's only for a couple of days. I've never used Autos Amigos so can't give an opinion but we always use Binicars also based in Cala'n Porter and i've never had anything other than excellent and competive priced cars from them.

Hi to everyone posting replies,

Thanks for all the comments - we might consider hiring a car for a couple of days (think the minimum is 3 days). We were hoping to keep costs down by using buses but would like to see more of the island other than just CnP. Obviously the first task is to stock up on supplies for self catering - hence all the queries re supermarkets. If anyone has other helpful advice please let me know. We like swimming & snorkelling, so any advice re good beaches will be helpful as we've never been to Menorca before.

Thanks
