Furano in winter for non-skiers

Hi All,

We're planning a trip to Sapporo mid-Dec 2011 (4 adults in 40s). As we are non-skiers, I'm wondering if we should make a trip down to the Furano-Biei area. I know the farms will be blanketed in snow, anything to see there or should I just spend my time in Sapporo?

Would appreciate your advice. First trip to Hokkaido in winter and looking forward to it.

Thanks.

Winter activities in Furano:

A sight rather than an activity, the Ningle Terrace next to the Prince Hotel Furano is worth going. It is beautifully lit up in the evening.

If you choose to stay in the cities instead of the winter ski resorts, the following are some winter events during the month of Dec.

Sapporo White Illumination, late Nov to mid Feb

Otaru Long Christmas, mid Nov – Dec 25

Hmm...I think in winter Furano is a place you pass thru and look at the views if you are a non-skier.

Asahikawa has the zoo...and an hour away is Sounkyou ice gorge with onsen hotels...and two hours further on is Lake Akan with ice fishing and onsen, then Kushiro with red-crested cranes...and then far east Hokkaido is Abashiri/Shari/Utoro with ice floes.....

If you are going to East Hokkaido - or doing an Onsen and Snow/Ice trip to Asahikawa/Sounkyou or Lake Akan...then Furano and Biei is a place to pass thru and look at the snowy scene.

I wouldn't go there in winter unless skiing.
