the imperial boathouse is on Chongmon beach not Chaweng although there is a sister hotel in Chaweng.....

We have stayed at the boathouse about 3 years ago. We had a standard room the first time and liked it so much we returned to the same hotel the following year and they gave us an upgraded room. Both rooms were lovely and spacious - the only difference was the furniture and a bigger bathroom.

From what i have seen on the reviews, the boat suites are not worth the money you pay but thats not saying that they wont be any good. In our standard room they have a fridge.

Regarding money, we took a couple hundred pounds in travellers cheques and the rest of our spending money we had in a Nationwide account (as they dont charge you for with cash withdrawels abroad) so we just had our debit cards.

Its easy to flag a cab just outside the hotel to get to chaweng and anywhere else on the island - it only takes about 10-15 min. Another option is to flag one of the brightly coloured vans - its almost like a bus - but you advise the driver where you are going, agree a price then jump in the back - alot cheaper and alot more fun than a cab.

There are plenty of restaurants on Chongmon beach - we tried all of them and they were all really good and very cheap. The food is good at the boathouse and although the food is still cheaper than in the UK its still expensive compared with outside the hotel.

The standard rooms have a larger balcony and smaller room. The bathroom in the standard rooms is quite poor with A shower over the bath and in need of a bit of an upgrade.

The premier rooms are bigger with a small seating area, bigger bathroom and separate shower, they also have a large bath that has shutters above it so that you can open it up into the bedroom. IMO the premier rooms are worth the small amount extra to upgrade although the hotel will often upgrade you for free if available. All rooms have a fridge you can use.

If you want to stay in a rice barge it would be best to book in advance as you will only get a better price at the hotel if they have extra capacity. I prefer the rooms because they are more private and modern.

As for money, it is definitely better to take british pounds and change them when you get there, the rate is always better.

Taxis to Chaweng are a fixed price across the road from the hotel, can't remember the exact price but is about £4 each way I think.
