Anyone remember Chaweng in 1994/1995

I'm interested to see how many people on Trip Advisor were some of the old backpackers of the 1990's and remember Chaweng Beach from them. Would love to swap some stories with you.

We stayed at Jah Dub Bar, in between Baan Samui and Dew Drop Huts - it is now The Library - how different it is!

Does anyone remember Sante Fe and the big opening night? Or Catching an old boat from Chaweng Beach to the Full Moon Party on Phangan?

Yes, we went back last year, change a bit too much for me, but our kids loved it.

We first visited Samui on our way home from the Middle East back in '91. WE fell in love with the place and have been back about 6 times and each time it is growing and changing. Does anyone remember the Lazy Bar on the beach or the 'monkey bar." This was actually Charlies I think but we called it the monkey bar because of his monkey in the tree right outside the bar. We have stayed further up the beach at Chaweng for our last few visits - older and wanting more comfort I guess but we still love it even with Starbucks and Macs. I do remember Dave's bar though.

Samui was our second Thai beach experience having "discovered" Thailand in 1994 on our Silver Wedding Discover SE Asia tour. Not backpacking for us though, we enjoyed the incredible value, compared to European destinations, of Thailand's 4 and 5* resorts. So we stayed on The Imperial on Chaweng Noi which we thought was an absolutely superb location. There were then just two or three local restaurants up the beach which provided our first taste of real Thai cuisine, especially seafood. Upto that point despite being brought up in a Fish & Chip shop run by my parents I avoided fish, having a phobia of choking on fish bones (even though Mum & Dad used filleted, boneless cod). However, having been persuaded by the wonderful aroma of my wife's snapper with three spice sauce I succumbed to a taste - phobia disappeared never to return!!!

My memories of Chaweng though were even then I thought to be too commercialised, even though at the time I think there was just one Starbuck's. A bit different now.

Ironically, Khao Lak now, which has become our second home reminds us of many aspects of Samui then but it too is on the verge of succumbing to the same commercialism that inevitably seems to follow any popular destination.

Thanks for sharing, I remember the Imperial Hotel, but of course I was on a backpackers budget so I could only sigh wistfully at such luxury.

It did seem quite commercialised back in 1994, but when compared to today it was nothing and I can't bear to return after our visit last year.

First stayed Chaweng xmas 1989 - thought I had (and indeed had) landed in paradise. Stayed at Matlang bungalows at the far end (North) for 200 baht

which was actually quite expensive then when Charlies was only 50 baht! 'Resorts' were spaced out about 300 metres or more apart! Imagine that? Fairy lights were lit up at night in the coconut trees behind the beach and barely a sole around after 8.00pm. Pass the kleenex!!!!!

My First trip was 1992. I went with a friend and shared a 2 bed fan bungalow at Silver Sands for 150baht a night.

Can remember both of us sitting on the back of a motorbike, crossing the rickety bridge to the old Green Mango, hanging on for dear life. Also spent many hours at the old Reggae Pub dancing on the sand floor. Favorite restaraunt was the Black Cat. Never made it to Koh Phangan as we were having too much fun in Chaweng.

Went back again in 1995 and stayed at the Chaweng Resort. It was still VERY quiet in South Chaweng. The old Reggae Pub had apparently burnt down in a fireworks accident, and the Green Mango had moved to where it still is today. Loved chilling out at the Sweet Soul Cafe next to the Chaweng Resort.

Went back in 1996 and splurged on Beachfront Bungalow at Chaweng Resort for our honeymoon. This was in November and it rained constantly for the first week and then we didn't see a cloud in the second week. Still didn't get to Phangan.

Returned in 2004 and with our kids and some friends and stayed at Chaba Samui. Was originally horrified by the changes but eventually found our groove when I discovered that the Silver Sands was still standing and so was our bungalow. Spent many nights at their beachfront restaraunt. We meant to get to Phangan but ran out of time.

Last went to Samui in 2009 and stayed at the Whitehouse in ChoengMon. Loved the beach there and the relaxed vibe. Went to Chaweng a few times and was really glad we hadn't stayed there. The Silver Sands had gone UPMARKET and a Phad Thai there had gone from 50-250baht in 5 years. Much preferred Lamai. Still a little too commercialised but much more like Chaweng in the late 80's, except for the fact that they had a McDonalds.

Maybe next time we will finally move on to Koh Phangan.

Thanks for sharing. Seriously, you must get to Phangan, I think you will love it - Bottle Beach is my favourite.
