help for 5 days on Lewis, Harris, No. Uist, in May

We are an adventuresome, sturdy mid-60s couple looking forward to a road trip focusing on neolithic and other ancient sites. We enjoy conversation in a good pub, excellent food & other creature comforts, discovery of all kinds. Flying into Stornoway, driving So. perhaps to Benbecula airport hoping we can drop off our rental car there (???). We would love to travel without reservations for hotels (not fond of B&Bs) if that would be possible in that season (?). Any & all advice as to what not to miss sites, restaurants, lodging, people, events, etc. most appreciated. Also info on flights from Barra. Are they regular and dependable at that time of year? Thanks for your guidance.

Mudlush, just spotted this post after the previous one I replied to!

May be a bit adventurous in 5 days if you want to truly experence the beauty of the outer hebrides?

Would be tempted to concentrate on Harris and Lewis OR the Uists. Both in five days, doesn't do them justice. :-)

We will actually have 6 days and 7 nights. Not enough maybe but it is what we have. We just want to make the most of that time enjoying our special interest in the ancient sites.

I'm not sure how easy it would be to do a one-way car rental in the Outer Hebrides. There are car rental companies (notably at Stornoway Airport).

Regarding flights to/from all destinations in the Outer Hebrides, see www.flybe.com

For ferry information see www.calmac.co.uk

Outside of Stornoway, full service hotels are few and far between. You may well be better staying in a good quality Bed and Breakfast.

Try the Rodel Hotel, and have a look at the 'rude' carvings on the neighbouring church.....

I think you would be probably be better off hiring a car, either in Glasgow, Oban or Fort William, and using the ferries to / from the Hebrides.

You might be interested in the Brochs in Glenelg, which is in the middle of some amazing scenery, facing Skye on the mainland.

Thanks Peterscott for the advice on the ancient sites. Still looking for that map or book specifically relating to all sites in the Western Isles.

Also would love opinions on lodging on No. Ouist. Langass or Tigh Dearg?
