Visiting Crete for the first time this year and thinking of this village. Could anyone tell me the cost of a large beer, glass of wine and a metaxa and coke. Also the cost of a main meal. Some of the reviews say that it is quite an expensive resort.

Hi we didn't find Koutouloufari any more expensive than other resorts. A starter and main meal with wine or beer would cost from 20 to 30 euro a few of the tavernas could be a little more expensive though. Drinks 3 to 3.5 euro large beer wine 2 euro glass long drinks a bit more expensive 5 to 6 euro. Cheaper drinks in Hersonissos large beer from 2 euro.

Koutouloufari,Piskopiano and Old Hersonissos are the three villages located above the busier resort of Hersonissos,so wherever you stay in this area you have a wide variety of choice and they are all within walking distance or a short taxi ride of each other. They all have a very wide variety of tavernas and bars that vary in price and quality and half the enjoyment is trying a different one each night, there are many excellent ones in Koutouloufari itself and at very reasonable prices, yes there are a couple we have found to be on the expensive side but there are many more in the areas mentioned that offer excellent fayre and typical friendly Cretan hospitality at very reasonable prices.

If you do decide to stay in the area be sure to come back on here and ask for recommendations,i'm sure there will be many too offer their opinions on their favourites.

The three villages mentioned all have an excellent variety of restaurants and bars with about pretty much the same prices....Someone mentioned a figure of 20 - 30 euros for two courses and wine/beer...This is a bit on the expensive side!! You should get more than one beer/wine for this price...

Beer varies quite a bit depending on whether it is a bottle of draught. Draught is often knocked out for two euros or less for a large one (400/500ml) mainly because it has a short sell by date on it so they have to get rid of it quickly!! Bottled beer can be from 2.50 euro from a small one to 5 euros for a large bottle....Glass of wine again varies a lot. Long drinks, spirit and mixer vary from 4 to 6 euros, GOOD cocktails from 5 euros to 8 euros, with the stress on the 'good'.

Prices for food on Crete have not changed much in the last 4 years!! You should be able to get a decent bowl of Greek salad, enough for two, for 4 - 4.50 euros, a main course like a whole chicken fillet will set you back about 8 euros, a steak depending on the cut and size will cost you up to 15 euros.

Your best bet is to look for a smaller taverna and go down the meze route, ordering say 5/6 small plates including a meat one (usually pork!), these will cost you around 4 - 6 euros each and you will have plenty for two, bread is usually included in this.......

Most importantly of all...Virtually everywhere will present you with a karafaki of raki and something sweet to end your meal...THIS IS FREE!!!! Which is the best price you can pay anywhere.....And if you finish one karafaki a lot of places will present you with another one and some more sweeties.....

If you want some ideas look at some of my reviews of places in the area,

I recently went to Gran Canaria and was horrified by the price of decent food!!
