Holiday in October

Hi

Just booked my October holiday

We have never been to this area before - any ideas for things to do/places to visit???

We have an 11 year old boy & my husband is quite partial to real ale

Any suggestions would be welcome

Thank you

I rank Bishops Castle as one of my best, unexpected, holiday discoveries. It is a beautiful little place, lots of old buildings and history. Dates from Norman times and still has its Norman frontier town street layout - this was in the days when Wales was bandit country. Tell your son that this area is the Norman equivalent of the Wild West! If he's interested, try to find some books on the subject.

There is a great pub 'The Three Tuns' with its own brewery, and several other good pubs in town.

Nearby Ludlow is a very attractive old town with large ruined castle.

Don't know about attractions for 11 year olds, but he might like the Severn Valley Railway - steam trains - which runs from Bridgnorth, not too far away

Couldn't agree more. BC is an undiscovered gem with great pubs, interesting shops and friendly locals. I've no idea why more people don't go here - the roads are empty as well. Who needs the Cotswolds !

Investigate the castles at Clun and Ludlow, canoeing on the River Teme, and the steam railway at Bewdley; there's plenty of opportunity to do outdoor stuff. There's also a small railway museum in town.

The Sun in Clun has just been taken over by the 3 Tuns people so should share their reasonably priced beers and good food. The 6 Bells is unspoilt, again with its own beer.

Let us know what you think.

There's a small Co-op halfway down the High Street. It's more the sort of place for independent shops though - butchers, bakers etc.

If you still need to do a big shop, stock up in Shrewsbury or Ludlow.

You have Acton Scott Historic farm which is open half term otherwise you need to check.

Ironbridge is not too far away plenty to see there.

If its wet there is Mickeys Millers Play Barn Craven Arms,.there is also the Discovery Centre in Craven Arms and Land of Lost Continent which is a museum of days gone by.

In Churchstoke and Craven Arms you have Harry Tuffins supermarket.

Re Ale there is The Plough Inn Wistanstow.

Look on www,shropshiregold.co.uk have Shropshire Real Ale Trail.

Enjoy

Good call. The garage in Churchstoke is much larger than the tiny one in Bishops Castle too.

Churchstoke is interesting (to trivia bores like me, anyway) as it the only place in Wales where, if you drive west, the next country you arrive in is...England.

IGMC....

There is a couple of race meetings at Ludlow in October. It is a charming course.

If you are into poetry, then A E Houseman is whom to read.

Much Wenlock is a nice place and where the modern Olympics were inspired.

Beer and cider abound.

You have, as everyone else has said, chosen a splendid part of the country to visit. Have fun.

Not any more. The delightfully quirky light railway that served BC closed many years ago, though it is the subject of a small museum in town : http://www.bcrailway.co.uk

These days, train to Shrewsbury and bus from there : https:/…

If anyone does visit, please post your thoughts.
