Apparently Vlachata -

"Incendio nelle campagne di Vlachata nei pressi dello studios Delphinia, se alloggiate in zona prestate attenzione!

— at Andromeda"

The above, with pictures is on the Cefalonia 4ever pages on fb

Google translation-

"Fire in the countryside of Vlahata near the studios Delphinia, if you stay in the area pay attention!

- At Andromeda"

We've just been woken up by the owner ofrour apartments saying there is a fire close to the building. We can see the orange glow and there is a lot of smoke drifting from the west towards the sea. People are leaving lourdas (we are staying right on the beach) by car. The wind is quite strong and is pushing the flames in the direction of lourdas. We are staying here for the moment but will wait and see how things pan out in the next hour or two.

The flames/glow seems to have died down a bit in the last hour. We are going back to bed!

We are staying right down by the beach, the fire was on the slopes down towards Kanali beach. Lots of people we're told to pack bags and head for the beach, we all sat and watched from our apartments, ready to go if need be. It took a few hours before we were given the all clear and since first light this morning the water helicopter is dousing the area. Quite scary last night but luckily didn't get to the main village. Not sure how much damage is done, there is a dusting of ash everywhere this morning where it's sheltered from the wind . It was very windy last night which made it even more of a nightmare with the fire- just as it seemed to die down it would flare up again.

Right now there is anorher fire by the airport. The smoke can easily be seen from lourdas and the wind is blowing it out to sea. The fire last night was right at the Western end of lourdas beach, over behind the little harbour towards trapezaki beach. We're staying very close the the harbour and it was close to out apartment block.

I hope it doesn't get to bad, I've known them to close the airport in the past when there are fires close by because of the smoke.

I gather there were a couple of villages evacuated last night, and four or more instances of fire in roughly the same area as it spread in the wind. Lourdas, Trapezaki, Vlachata. Helicopter up this morning spraying water on the remaining hot patches. Crews worked all night. Some folk packed and left their accommodation to go to the beach, but I gather all are back now. Quite a sight if you look at the photos at the bottom of this page:

Whatever the firemen earn - both on the ground and in the planes - they deserve more. A tough night for them.
