Any beach front places to stay along the Tasman Bay that are under $75 US for 2 people or is that impossible to find? Thanks

I always recommend www.aamaps.co.nz for distances - click on "directions" and put in 2 or more places.

The start of the Abel Tasman Track and where the water taxis leave from is at Marahau. If you have sleeping bags you could stay in cabins at the Marahau Beach Camp. They are about $70 NZ night but you share toilets and showers in the camping ground facilities. Otherwise there are motels at Marahau but I dont know at what cost. The Abel Tasman is about hours drive from Nelson but you could get accomodation at Mapua or Ruby Bay which is in between Nelson and Abel Tasman but you will have to look online to see if there is any on the waterfront. Hope this helps.

You have a great choice in Golden Bay .....we always investigate the cabins in the motor camps before motels.

Places like Pohara .....Patons Rock ,collingwood are sensational for a lazy stopover.

Do not miss going all the way to Farewell Spit if you are making the effort to go over the Takaka Hill.

Would it make sense to go Picton to Marahau and then to Pohora or some other place back down to the west coast? Is a night over in Nelson necessary?

Also, how much farther driving wise is the farewell spit? Thanks!

Picton to Marahau is very doable but plan on arriving at Marahau quite late because it is a very nice drive and you will probably want to stop several times on the way. You can drive the Queen Charlotte Drive around the Sounds from Picton that brings you out by Havelock but it will take longer but it is well worth it. Pohara and Golden Bay was quite affected by floods pre-Christmas so check out the conditions and roads.

Yes I would take the Queen Charlotte Drive.....a little bit tight to the uninitiated but easy passage.

Nelson is a great place but more in the Food, arts and city stop over genre so if its small ,rustic and scenery you want consider heading to the 'wilds' of the West Coast
