Hi D. Yes travel is very easy around Argostoli. There are always taxis at the rank off the square & the bus service is reliable during the day. We stay in Lassi & use the bus to go to the markets in town. It's €5 in cab from town to Lassi. From the airport there are always taxis there, not sure of cost to Argostoli but its €15 to Lassi so guess €20-25.

Alternatively Argostoli to Lassi is walkable, takes about 30 minutes give or take. You can also get the Ferry from the harbour in Argostoli to take you over to Lixouri, which has a lovely Greek feel to it, with nice tavernas and a couple of beaches that are walkable from the harbour in Lixouri. The Ferry runs every 30 mins throughout the day and the crossing takes 25 minutes and has spectacular views.

Hi Deb and welcome,

You can walk along the harbout and find several boat tours. Might have to book a day in advance during August.

Wouldn't bother booking a taxi from the airport as there are usually plenty there. Last year at the start of the season there were buses running from the airport to Argostoli. It was just for a few weeks. I was wondering if it was an experiment and they MAYBE starting a regular bus service from the airport.

Hi Deb,

If on the map you are looking at there is the harbour on the left and what looks like a wall with a couple of kinks crossing it . Then the "wall" is in fact a bridge and the area on the right is a lagoon which is apparently a haven for wildlife and fishing. I do not know of an openair pool in Argostoli.

Re boat trips; there used to be one in a glass bottom boat (actually it had several windows in the hull and wasn't a "glass bottom") that took you via a deserted island (Vardiani) to a barbecue on a beach near Xi Beach. We enjoyed it but that was some 10 years ago so not in a position to recommend it now. Others will perhaps have more up to date info.

Does anyone know the situation for travel in Kefalonia regarding the recent earthquake? We are booked for Lixouri in June but the hotel has been cancelled as it is not opening this summer due to damage. We cannot get the flights refunded. Is it still recommended to travel to the Island and if so where is it best to stay please?

There is no problem with the rest of the island, according to my friends who live out in Kefalonia. The earthquakes were centred mainly around the peninsula - Lixouri - and the rest of the island remains relatively undamaged, especially down in the south. There were a few rockfalls and cracks on the roads, but that happens every winter anyway with the high rainfall, and those will be cleared in time for the start of the tourist season.

If you still have your flights, I'd still use them, and book a different hotel. As things stand at the moment, I have no hesitation at all in flying out there at the beginning of May. Remember it is an island well used to earthquakes, the buildings are made to withstand them.

Hi Stemginger and welcome,

Sorry to hear about the cancellation. Hardly any hotels have been damaged to that extent as far as I know.

It is fine to visit the island and many of the regulars have already booked as well as lots of first timers.

This link lists most of the resorts along the top and clicking on them will give more info. Choose a resort and we can help with hotels, apartments etc.

It will probably be better to ask a new question on the cephalonia forum rather than continuing on this one as peole who do not have info on Argostoli will probably not see it.

You can be assured of a great time on the island.
