Myrtos & Lixouri

Just seen this on Greek Reporter.com

Michalis Chrisochoidis, Minister of Infrastructure, Transport and Network, visited the quake stricken Cephalonia to inspect the progress of the constructions at the Lixouri port and the road network of the island.

He indicated that Myrtos, the famous beach of the Greek island which was inaccessible due to rock fall protection works, will be open again to bathers in a couple of days.

According to Chrisochoidis, the first phase of the restoration works at Lixouri port has already been completed within the required timeframe. The new section of the port regarding its western side and the anchorage for tourist boats in the region of Legatata with a budget of 3,7 million euros has been tendered. The duration of the restoration project is nine months by the time the contract was signed, estimated till the end of July.

The budget for the restoration of the road network is estimated at 24,5 million euros. The project includes three construction works. One regarding rock fall protection measures and two on the restoration of damages on the road network caused by the earthquake.

“There has been an enormous effort, the whole state mechanism has been mobilized in order to make Cephalonia a better place than before,” the Minister said.

We left Cephalonia last week and work was being carried out on the road down to Myrtos. We were told that a rock as high as a house had landed right beside the toilet block on Myrtos during the earthquake. I think the authorities have everyones safety in mind. To me the cliff face never looks very safe at the best of times!

Very sad as we have to think of those who are losing business because of the situation too.
