Safety of Public Buses at evening

Hello

We were thinking of taking a public bus from Arequipa to Cabanaconde. There is a 2pm bus (Milagros) which arrives around 7pm and a 4pm bus (Reyna) which arrives around 10pm.

1) How safe are these buses to travel in at night for 2 females, and 2) How comfortable are these buses? How early should we be lining up

Also, for those who have done guided tours- what was your experience? Would you do self guided if you were to do it over again?

Thanks!

Go with a tour company. Forget the public bus unless you are on some kind of minimal budget.

Do the daytime bus, there is a lot to see.

Hello, Thanks for your reply

Is there a tour company you would recommend? I do not want to spend a lot on the tour since we are on a tight budget. Also approximately how much are the tours.

Also, in terms of "there is a lot to see"- what exactly are you referring to?

Thanks!

You stop to see the volcanoes viewpoint, the pampas with vicunas and possibly flamingos at the lakes, some tours will stop on the way to see some of the unusual plants. The scenery along the way is open high plains and mountains.

There are several options available when you get to Arequipa you can shop around for a package that includes your bus, lodging and transportation to see the Condor's cross.

Some of the cheapest options may include the public bus, not sure if these also include transfer to Condor Cross.

Others put you on a pool bus, at least it makes a few stops along the way and provides the transfer within the Canyon.

There is what is sort of a semi-private option with Giardino Tours, they have their own van and guides but you don't travel alone. They are located at their hotel in Arequipa Casa de Mi Abuela, not on Jerusalen with the other agencies.

Another option is the 4-M Express bus, I suggest calling or emailing them through your hotel. Their website seems not to be working very well at the moment for me. Possibly the tour packages in Arequipa can include this service.

Hi I mention a little about the local buses are not comfortable at all

(clarification schedules not all companies are going to cabanaconde only to Chivay, schedules can change and there is no online bookings either by phone)

Also one of the objectives is to observe nature in the course of the Colca Valley and Colca Canyon.

Another option is to hire a tour which is recommended to listen to the explanation of the history, culture, customs of different places on the course

There is also the option of doing everything by tourist bus

Arequipa there are companies that offer this service, you can hire from agencies, tour operators in Arequipa

(clarification 4m company is not going to the city of cabanaconde only until chivay)

Prices range from U.S. $ 15 - U.S. $ 25

This service if they make stops at the most visited spots

If you want more information I'm here to help

These busses are fine. You could take the 2 pm bus as far as Chivay, overnight in Chivay, and in the early morning there is a bus going to the Condor viewpoint.

Or you can sleep in Cabanaconde and there also there is an early morning bus to the viewpoint where you will arive before any tourgroup, when it is very quiet.

Don't know about the quality of the bus, but the quality of the road was not great. Very winding with drop offs. Lots of potholes causing the bus to slow down and drive in the opposite lane at times. I would not have wanted to be doing the drive from Arequipa to chivay in the dark. And from chivay on it was also not a paved road.
