The Canyon is not accessable due to recent earthquakes

About a week ago there was a largish earthquake that did a lot of damage in Cabanaconde and caused a lot of landslides in the canyon. There have been many aftershocks since, and as a result, it's not possible to safely get into the canyon at all right now.

Most tour companies we spoke to were open about this and only sold tours of the above canyon area (Cruz del Condor etc) which are fine and not affected... but we did hear of some companies selling treks and then not telling you that you can't get into the canyon until you are out there.

Not sure how long this will be a problem for, but just be extra careful when booking treks.

I call my friend, a guide in Arequipa, he told me that the Colca is not closed and that tens and tens of tourists are trekking into the canyon. the quake destroyed some parts of trail from Cabanaconde to Sangalle that they were already repaired. the trail from San Juan it's being repaired. Road from Arequipa to Cabanaconde was not affected for the quake, 5.1 richter, so tourists doing the conventional tour wont have any problem.

My son is in Arequipa at the moment and has been told he can't hike in the canyon due to earthquake.

As previous post mentioned tours around the top of the canyon are OK

Hello Everyone!

Is there anyone out there who has hiked the Canyon this year and can update on the conditions of the trails? Particularly Cabanaconde to San Juan? Thanks.
