Yllas log cabins

Can anyone please help!!!!! We have booked a Lapland holiday going on Tuesday with Inghams. We would like to go skiing on one of the days, will be able to ski in the suits provided or will we need to take our own gear?

Also has anyone stayed in the log cabins half board, eating at the Akas hotel? Will we need to wear our thermal suits to evening meal or do you take them off at the hotel?

Please help, I am a very confused women lol

you will be fine skiing in the snow suits supplied, however, have you skiied before as if not, one day will not be enough and will probably put you off skiing for life as the first couple of days learning is hell ;-)

you will need to wear your suits when you go for meals and just peal them off or down to your waist and tie them around your waste

you will find everyone is out and about in their snow suits and will wear them in the hotels and just roll them down when inside - it's very casual and there will be places to store you suits if you decide to take them off

have a wonderful time

Thanks for the great advice.

Yes we have been on quite a few skiing holidays so hopefully we will be fine.

Can you give me any other advice?

One more thing I have a 16 year old Son do you think they will let him ride the snow mobiles by himself

you have to have a driving licence to drive a snowmobile so he wont be able to drive one but I also think that the age in finland is 16 but without a driving licence they will not let him, you wont need to show the licence but if you get stopped then you need to be able to produce one

you will love it there, do the huskies if you can and do the super safari with ighams, your son will be able to drive the huskies which is great fun

when you go to the supermarket, take a sledge with you to pull your shopping back but watch it does not get pinched as its a bit of a free for all with the sledges, also pay for shopping bags in the supermarket so take some with you if you can and find out what things are in finnish it will really help as it's hard to know what things are, also, watch out for the prices as somethings are really expensive

there is a nice pizza place just down from the supermarket on the opposite side of the main road, it's part of a pub and the entrance is at the side, you need to order your food at the food order place and they will then bring you the food, it is not waitress service which can cause confussion when you first go in there.

as you are going skiing, make sure you have lots of layers as it can be bitterly cold and you will also have to pay for the ski bus unless inghams are giving passes out?

also, do not walk on the cross country ski tracks, if you have to walk on them then keep clear of the tracks themselves

have a great time and just be careful with the fires in the cabins as they really heat the places up and it gets unbarably hot in them and if you are in the actic area then it is horribly hot and dry so be mindful of this and when you get to the cabin, make sure you are shown how to use the little level that is part of the kitchen mixer taps as these feed water into other areas of the cabins

This year Ylläs has two types of ski lift passes: with and without ski bus. So, if your pass includes the ski bus you don't have to pay for the bus separately.

Prices: http://www.yllas.fi/?deptid=9043 .Prices including the ski bus are under the title Ylläs area skipass pricing.

Further info on driving a snowmobile you can find at liikenneturva.fi/tietolehti/…snow_mobile.php . Age limit is 15, but the driver must have at least a T type driver's licence (i.e. the one that entitles the driver to drive e.g. a tractor, a moped (M) licence is not enough).

Thanks all

I think he will have to go on the back of someone.

My youngest son (11) has a nut allergy as we are going half board at the Akas does anyone know if the staff will be able to help on which food contains nuts?

How many layers of clothes do you think we will need????

Regarding nut allergy: the staff in the restaurants are all professionals, so they will be able to tell you which foodstuffs contain nuts. Furthermore, you can also advise them in advance, so they can take it into account and ensure that there's always something suitable available.

Usually two mid layers will be enough for most people and most temperatures, but if it is extremely cold (below -20 or -25°C) and you are going to spend extended times outdoors, you can add as many layers as you need or feel comfortable moving about with (nobody will care what you'll look like).

Age limit for driving a tractor with T licence is 15 in Finland. You have to be 16 to drive (and get a licence) for driving a light (max 125 cm³ and 11 kW) motorbike (= A1 licence).

we tended to wear a base layer, one mid layer bottoms and two mid layers on top but all layers were thin, when we were there the last time we had temps of nearly -30 and we didn't up the layers as we were fine, however, we did need to cover our face more and add an extra pair of socks

we only experienced temps like that one in yllas, the other times we were there it was usually around the -10 mark
