Flying economy and long haul shouldn't be a punishment. However, with United Airlines I was treated with the basic curtesy, minimum communication and generally an unwelcome guest on an 11 hour flight. The basic blanket and pillow was given, no eye mask, no toothbrush, no ear plugs like some other airlines in economy. The entertainment system were screens in the centre of the plane (very outdated) however it wasn't working in economy and we were told to use our own devices and use the airlines app. But we should have downloaded before we got onto the plane, no-one at check in told us this (even there the airport check in staff for United just shouted at us to get in line and drop off our luggage). It bothered me that the stewards were not apologetic or friendly and hearing them give the same explanation to an elderly gentleman who had no smart phone or tablet was just sad. The staff were on the verge of being rude, like robots heartless. Rubbish was collected as though they were disgusted with what we were giving back to them, with a black trash bag in hand. Fearing the need to ask for extra water, as you may get a look of distaste for putting them to do something extra (which happened). On my flight going to San Francisco the feeling was the same except the entertainment system was on the back seats and one English steward gave me a fresh cup of tea as she understood my disappointment when I was given a stewed warm tea. Generally very disappointing and I will pay the extra $100 to fly with a little more dignity next time.
