“Austin Meeting”
Review of United Airlines

Reviewed 28 August 2017

My daughter and I flew United from Peoria to Austin for a business meeting. The Peoria Airport is very convenient for us so it's nice to have United out of Peoria. The flights went smooth including connections.

Compared to other recent flights on Delta, Southwest, and Alaska, this is by far the worst airline I've flown. Even on a cross-country flight they have no complimentary entertainment or food. Delta gave both... and in the same price range! United doesn't even have screens to show the flight progress.
And United's Zone 5... is a miserable joke. You can't have a seat assignment until you arrive at the gate, which is okay until they tell you that you can't sit with your companion... EVEN THOUGH THERE ARE EMPTY SEATS TOGETHER AVAILABLE!!! That's right, you can only have a middle seat with a zone 5 ticket no matter what else is available.
We came off this flight saying "never again" to United.

We arrived well in advance of our flight on our original flight from Albuquerque to Houston. We knew we'd have a 5 hour layover and were OK with that. We were boarded on time and were ready to go. But, nothing happened. The pilot came on and said that we were being delayed by weather both at Houston and along our intended route. He stated that FAA was the reason for our delay. Hours later he came on again with a hopeful comment that we should be on our way within the next hour. Finally, after sitting on the plane for over 5 hours, we were asked to de-board the plane back into the terminal. We weren't told why. But, we later learned that we were so late that the crew could no longer take us as they would have been in violation of FAA rules about time in service. So, another "fresh" crew had to be found. We waited in the terminal again for over an hour before being asked to get back on the plane. Finally, the plane took off at 1 AM after being initially scheduled to leave at 7 PM. We had a total delay of 6 hours. We were offered nothing for our trouble. I thought United had an obligation to better inform us and they didn't. When we were asked to leave the plane, there was not an apology or a reason why. We were treated like sheep to be corralled and herded. It was a horrible experience.

I have flown multiple times from China to the States and this is my choice of routes. Hangzhou is a small, big city and far more pleasant to me then the mega cities. Hangzhou has smaller crowds, lines, etc but it is still a large enough city/airport that you can easily accomplish what you need to/get where you need to go.
United is really good about snacks, movies, and tries to I have never been late with them.
