I just got back from Turks and Caicos, staying at the Club Med. I had never stayed at a Club Med resort before, so I didn't know what to expect. I went with a good friend (she is 29, I am 31), just looking to disconnect from everyday life. Overall, I would go back and do it again! Here are the pros and cons. Hoping this helps any of you looking to go - I used Trip Advisor for this decision and it worked out well for us.
*All inclusive was great - no stress. Club Med was very organized, pre, during, and post vacation. They had all the travel setup, reminders about flight times, etc. Go for the main package - so you don’t have to worry about tips or transportation. So nice not to have to carry cash around or worry about being ripped off. Also - this Club Med with no kids - awesome for 2, 30ish year olds who just want to get away without lots of kid noise.
*Short travel time from Baltimore, MD
*One of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean (and I have been to the Caymans and Virgin Islands, just for comparison sake) - the most blue water and flawless sand
*Tons of activities to do, if you like that (but you can also just do nothing as well). They offered lessons for several things including: Tennis, Kayaking, Sailing, Windsurfing, Trapeze, Zumba, etc. Outside of lesson times, you could just use the facilities and the equipment. They also had tons of workout classes today. It was a great place to stay active and try new fun things.
*The food was great. Tons of variety, no matter what type of eater you are. Healthy, not, vegetarian, meat lover, etc. They had ample food, a lot of selection, and all courses. You must, must, must try the chocolate bread – white and dark – incredible. But be sure that you are doing activities to work it off during the day – it is addicting!
*All the people at the resort were incredibly friendly and helpful. Very interactive and nice staff from all over. This also included the instructors for all the sports.
*Facilities were very pretty and spanned a good amount of ground - one of the biggest, if not the biggest, resorts on the stretch of beach we were on.
*Plenty of areas that were quiet. You could go lay on the beach, or hammocks, or grassy areas where it was very quiet and a bit more secluded. Or if you wanted, you could lay by the pool and see lots of people, get a drink, and have music in the background (not the best music, so bring an iPod)
*Weather is typically beautiful from what we heard. Unfortunately, it rained while we were there, but they said it had not been rainy for 6 months.
*Eating times covered most of the day where you could get to some food at all times. 3 main restaurant/buffet times, with a "snack" shack during off times. Limited food at the snack shack, but helped if you missed the main buffet times.
*If you couldn’t adjust to the weather, but wanted to stay healthy, they did have a gym. Small, but met the needs for the most part. Also had indoor group fitness room with some steps and a heavy bag.
*Plenty to do at the resort - really no need to leave. Food, shopping, beach, pool, people....you never had to deal with transportation if you didn’t want to.
*Would highly recommend some of the excursions (paid options) – they have a little office onsite to book things (or call in advance to book). Paddle boarding, Wave runners, horseback riding, etc were all offered. I ride horses in my everyday life - and I have to say riding horses on this beach and in that water was one of the best experiences ever (and I have ridden in other tropical places...this didn’t compare. make sure to use the one through club med...the other guy on the island doesn’t have the same good setup, we heard).
*They typically offered shows at night. The staff was entertaining. It is not a NYC style thing - but unique and fun. The only trade off - most of the shows didn’t start until 10pm.
*SAFE. Crime is very, very low here. We felt very safe on the resort, and even on the island. Drivers were nice and cautious, people left their stuff sitting around all over the place, and as 2 women walking around alone - we never felt threatened.
*You can buy a phone/internet package – it was I think $70 for a week. Great deal if you need to hop online or call in to family – and you don’t have an international cell phone plan. The connection was solid and access was easy.
*Rooms are more like dorm rooms. Very basic. We had twin beds (my Friend and I). Not the most comfy mattresses. 2 closets to store stuff, some shelves, hangers, and 1 suitcase stand. Very small TV, but decent channel selection. Lots of bugs in the room...the biting kind, as the rooms were not well insulted. Good AC in the room, but not much adjustment with the temp. They did provide ample towels and came daily to clean the rooms. also had a small fridge, which was nice to keep our water cold. (they also supplied 4 bottle waters upon arrival).
*Bartender service was terrible. Bartender was not friendly, took about 20-30 minutes to just get a drink. Drink selection was limited, and they were out of drinks quite a bit. Found this service at 2 bars - the main pool bar and the snack shack (Sharkys). Probably this was the worst part of the vacation (and I am not a huge drinker).
*Pool was a bit dirty - just older tile and some mold. They did make efforts to clean up leaves and stuff though.
*Dinner was too late. Breakfast was in the typical morning time, went to 1030. Lunch started at 1230. Good span of time. But then dinner wasn’t until 730. Way too late - a big span of time. The snack bar, didn’t offer many solutions for healthy snacking. Maybe a few apples at best. Otherwise, you had to order fries, grilled cheese, salad, etc - a main meal. Would have liked some veggies, chips, something "snackable"
*Gym was very crowded (small) and smelled terrible. Needed more ventilation. Also frequently didn’t have towels or anything to clean up sweat.
*Bugs were TERRIBLE. It rained a lot when we were there, so likely worse, but mosquitoes in room every night (several) and terrible outside during day and night. Bring your own bug spray and apply often. (also bring lots of sun screen...very expensive at boutique).
*Not much else outside of resorts...a few gift shops and bars. Pretty desolate island. So this is not the place for you, if you like to go discover new things outside of your hotel area.
*For buffet food, most tables are group tables, if you have less than like 6 people, you likely will have to share tables for eating. For some people this is a great opportunity to meet and talk with others - but if you are looking to keep to yourself, this can be a downer. If you want one of the four, 2 person tables, be there when the buffet first opens
*Would have liked to see all the options prior to arrival. Times of activities, options etc. Since we only stayed for a short amount of time (4 nights), it would have been nice to plan ahead. I recommend, if you are doing any excursions (like horseback riding), looking into booking before you leave for the trip.
*Lesson times are tough. They typical offer only once per day (per skill level). the more unique events fill up fast, so you have to plan ahead. Would have liked if they had offered more times, so you wouldn’t have to pick between activity lessons (we ran out of time!).
