An enjoyable, not too physically demanding (grade II water) 3 hr trip, which did not require any previous canoeing or rafting experience, was ably guided by tour operator Shane. The inflatable Kanoes were very easy to paddle and very stable.
Our group of 12 (two per Kanoe) paddled on the Pelorus (or optional Wakamarina) river. The trip was a great fun way for our group to enjoy the 100% water visibility, listen to the bird songs and have history of the river’s environment explained to us as we were guided down the Pelorus. The pace of the trip allowed time to raft up and photograph the extremely scenic bush backdrop and bird life living along the river bank.
We did not see any trout in the river though Shane said he often did. For a group booking like ours the refreshments (nice home baking & fresh fruit) served on the river bank at the end of the trip was the perfect finish before we were vanned the short distance back to our starting point in Havelock. An interesting addition to the "canoeing" on this trip was viewing the spots on the river used in the movie The Hobbit, Pt 2 and hearing Shane’s contributions to the barrel scene.
This trip needs minimum of 2 persons, so single travelers if you can find yourself a partner you’ll both enjoy a neat adventure. Social group will find this trip is something special for a spot of team building and easy outdoor activity. Good value for money. Would like to try the Wakamarina next time, I'm sure it will be just as pretty.

Our first go at kayaking and a beautiful location to learn. Shane was very attentive and made the whole experience relaxing and fun - even when we got a bit stuck! A great way to spend the afternoon, and cool to be a hobbit for a while!

We thought we'd just be given a kayak and off loaded upriver. Proprietor Shane guided us down the river and pointed out flora and fauna. Answered our questions and gave us a terrific time. Very professional and friendly. Highly recommended!

Shane(owner) and Phil(guide) were very careful about safety on the river. I walk with a brace(due to polio) and getting to the river was no problem...Phil simply threw me over his shoulder and away we went! We had thought we wanted to rent kayaks and paddle on the Sound but this was much more exciting.

Our family really enjoyed this afternoon activity. The equipment was all first class and the best I have used with any company. Comfortable wetsuits, lifejackets and helmets. And the excellent kayaks. The Pelorus river and scenic reserve is a stunning area. the water was clear and its such a different perspective from the water. We enjoyed the rapids, jumping into the water in the deep swimming holes and going under the waterfalls. We could well imagine the orcs and hobbits on the rocks! Thanks Shane. A great day.
