“South Downs haven”

Great pub, welcoming (and efficient) staff, good food and a really interesting bedroom (Indigo). The electric fan in our room was a nice touch during the hot weather, and the powerful shower really hit the spot after having spent the day at Goodwood Festival of Speed. I wish we had been staying for more than 1 night, as the village is in a lovely spot for the Downs and some steep walks.

The room was perfect. It was beautifully put together; gigantic, very comfortable bed, interesting "distressed" beside tables. It was a real luxury to have a sofa too. The bathroom was big, modern and well designed with a large, powerful shower. It passed the "towel test" too - large, thick, and soft with the added extra of fluffy dressing gowns.

We arrived much later than expected, the kitchen had closed but they offered to cook something for us, We had a really creamy risotto with sea bass and a beautifully cooked steak. Breakfast was good too.

Room Tip: Each room is different so it depends which style you like - but as it is incredibly popular and wi...

Very dissapointing overpriced food. My wife had an unbelievably small portion of seabass - they probably got 4 meals out of one fish. Another pub trying to charge restaurant prices but not delivering.Suggest they stick to traditional pub food at affordable prices.Didn't stop for another drink or desert as we felt ripped off + didn't want to give them any more of my hard earnt money. Used to love this pub but won't be going back unless things change.

A place to avoid if you are hungry or like value for money. Our portions were tiny - beautifully arranged on the plate, tasted good but there was hardly anything there. "Trout salad with new potatoes" had one small new potato cut into 4 and artistically arranged. Three of us had pork, there was just about enough meat but the vegetables amounted to about half a tablespoon of shredded cabbage and a tablespoonful of mashed potato. Service was poor, promised desert menu never arrived - you have to go to the bar if you want anything. We decided to go home for coffee & cake to fill up.

Like the immediately preceding reviewer (“Caroline P”), we stayed in the Indigo room and we strongly endorse all her positive comments about this smart room with huge bed and funky bathroom.

We too were disappointed that there were no tea/coffee making facility in the room, although tea or coffee will be made for you downstairs at the bar (free of charge) to take up to your room if you ask. The bedroom window was not locked when we stayed (though from memory there was a stay limiting how far it could be opened – but wide enough on what was a hot day), so I suspect you only have to ask for it to be unlocked if you find it locked. The Indigo room is quiet as it is at the back of the building – front bedrooms may well suffer from traffic noise.

We only ate (full English) breakfast, which was excellent, but the blackboard menu for other meals looked very tempting. The dining area has a nice ambience.

If you are going to the opera at Glyndebourne, it is about 25 minutes away on pleasant country roads (although you need to expect minor holdups if you go through Lewes late afternoon).

The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Indigo room is spacious and quiet as at back of building

We stayed in the Indigo room for two nights B&B. The room was spacious with two wardrobes and lots of space for bags etc. It was clean and tidy and the big bed (two singles pushed together) was comfortable. The bathroom was really groovy - huge walk-in shower and very funky mirror. The slight disappointment was no tea or coffee making facilities in the room. We got the impression they wanted you to buy your hot drinks at the bar instead which was a bit of a shame. Other facilities were good, eg bathrobes, lovely soft towels, toiletries, chocolate and sweeties in the room, hairdryer. Another slight bugbear was the temperature of the room - the windows were locked shut, even in the bathroom, and the room got very hot.
The cooked breakfast was delicious and we also ate in the restaurant one evening - would highly recommend the food.
Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay here.

This is a wonderful pub - marvellous atmosphere and delicious food. However, the rooms are in dire need of some tender care - in our room the ceiling was peeling ,the carpet was grubby and the window didn't close properly. The condition of the rooms is not reflected in the overnight rate charged - they are far too high. It's such a shame as everything else about the pub is outstanding. We would definitely go back for a meal, but definitely would not stay overnight!
