“Pricey rooms, but good value meals; overall very happy”
Reviewed 11 January 2014

I stayed here for one night in the middle of a walking tour of Gran Canaria with The Untravelled World (Spain). I'd walked from Juncalillo in about 4 h 20 min, the latter part of the walk being of stunning quality. I'd prebooked the hotel and it was quite pricey (£58 for just the room) but there are few options in the Gran Canaria mountains and the room was traditionally furnished in a pleasing manner. The best bits of my stay, however, were the meals, with both dinner (€14) and breakfast (€7) being excellent.

We didn't stay at the hotel but had the chance to eat a fantastic meal at the Hotel Restaurant.

They have both "european food" such as sandwiches, hamburgers and french fries but we siggest to try the canarian food.
we had papas arrocas (small potatoes bolid with salt) with a fantastic mjo picon (a tipical chilly sauce) and chicken with rice, a specil cream and figgs. Very tasty
And moreover, it was at all expensive.

There is also a curiosity about the place, that maybe for some people it could represent a negative factor (for us it didn't, we were amused): only if you eat outside, you may have special "guests" visiting you (under your table) tryng to ask for some piece of bread: hens and cocks of the neighbouring fields.
That's also Gran Canaria.

We went in winter so it may be different at other times. Before going be aware that the hotel is at 5000 feet - so often cloudy and wet and very cold. Also be aware that there is nothing else at Cruz beyond another bar and an occasional market. However if you are going for the walking it is absolutely the best place on the island to be.

The bedrooms are lovely - warm and comfortable, clean sheets etc. Downstairs is a different matter! if you like the unusual (a 'local' feel to things) you may enjoy it here. The decor is amazing. In December the rooms downstairs were very cold. Water came through the roof of one room. The staff were variously miserable or friendly, but all slightly 'local'. Food - a la carte excellent, menu good (lots of country food such as rabbit and goat) unless you are a vegatarian. Full of locals at the weekend, empty the rest of the time.

It was like Fawlty Towers because you never knew quite what was going to happen, where you would be eating breakfast, whether the wiatress would smile at you. WE HAD A GREAT HOLIDAY!
