With competition from so many other castles in the area, it is hard for any castle to stand out, but this one manages it. Perched impressively on a hill at the upper end of a delightful village, it is always an impressive sight. Well worth paying a visit inside too, and the views over to AMble from the castles walls are great!

The medieval life fair the weekend we visited was our reason to visit Warkworth. It was a very pleasant visit. The fair was small, but they did some very informative and entertaining talks that our 3 & 5 year olds could appreciate as much as we could. It's not a dramatic place, but small, quiet, and a nice place to explore without crowds.

Took the kids here on the back of visits to two other restored / preserved castles and was a bit wary because it is a ruin, but actually it was the best one! Fascinating layout and mostly accessible so loads to see. Friendly staff in the shop who were more than happy for us to picnic in the grounds. We used the audio tour which was very good. Very reasonable entrance price.
Definitely child friendly - nothing to break! Only disappointment was that we couldn't see the Hermitage as the boat only runs Sundays and bank holidays so check before you go!

There are newer castles and older ones. This one is very interesting - it is a ruin, but there is enough there so you can see how big it was, how people lived, and what amenities were available. The view is also quite stunning. It is a bit out of the way but used a sat nav to find the route rather than looking on the map. Easily spent over two hours just looking, reading and listening to the interactive guide.

You will see lots of castles in England, but the Hermitage is a rare but wonderful find? Hewn out of the rock, it is an amazing result of dedication.
