We booked into the George Inn for 2 nights Fri - Sun. We arrived about 4pm and was greeted by a friendly member of staff, who informed us we had been 'up graded' to their annex (self catering flat). Asked what time we wuld like breakfast in the morning 7.30 am we said as we were on a course in the morning, Ok that's fine we were told. She gave us the key and showed us where we were staying. Lovely bright room, with a large noisy fridge, lovely bathroom. All clean and tidy apart from the 1/4 glass of lime cordial left on the side. There were some packets of cereal and a jug of milk in the fridge (Nice touch we thought) We had an evening meal in the bar which was very nice, although the dessert menu was not as the table menu . Bar staff were friendly. Went to use the milk that was in the fridge in the morning and it was off. We arrived back at the bar at 7.30am for breakfast, but the door was locked. By 7.45 we walked to the local bakers a bought something there. On our way back we popped into the bar, and said to the landlady we had tried to come in for breakfast but it was all locked up, only to be told that they didn't open until 8am at weekends, and the staff member should have told us that. Not even a sorry!!!!! Just a 'There shouldn't have been any cereal packets in our room as they were for the previous customer'! So obviously the room hadn't been properly cleaned out. Very poor customer service from the management I think, perhaps they don't need the custom. The breakfast on the Sunday was very nice, but did not make up for the lack of apology. I am glad we were not in a room as there was a party upstairs on the Saturday evening which was very loud. There is a lot of road noise, which does die down later in the evening, and the annex is situated where people park outside, so some noise from there.

This is a 16th Century Grade II listed coaching inn NOT a hotel really and because of this it is on a main road, hence noise) and has restricted size rooms. The rooms have been recently refurbished with modern netural decor and small but modern shower rooms (not bathrooms). Ours has original beams and alot of character with a flat screen TV on the wall.

The bar area has lovely wood panelling and a real log fire and the restaurant area has been recently re-decorated (since other reviews i have read). I had fish and chips which were excellent with crispy batter and 'proper' chips, and my partner had the steak with peppercorn sauce which was well cooked and good value for the portion. The brekkie also hit the spot even with local sausages over those horrible frozen ones you often get. No problems with service, totally adequate for this kind of accommodation, did have to ask for some extra cutlery though. Irish landlady was charming and no one was rude to us.

People who review on this website in general must take in to consideration how much they are paying and what they are paying for; this is not a five star hotel and neither is it trying to be. We certainly did not have the same bad experience as others and i would agree that there is noise from the road but as it is Listed i don't see how the owners can resolve this!

Accomodation was dirty, staff were unhelpful, hotel was under renovation. My room had holes in the wall and was part was through decoration. TV only got one channel. It is on a busy road and was very noisy from the main road and the adjoining rooms. Doors slamming all night. Tea / Coffee facilities were dirty, shower grimy etc etc etc! Dont bother staying here!!

The building itself is nice but the decor is a little passed its sell by date. The staff were unattentive in the restaurant, the food when it finally arrived was bland and cold ( the food was delivered in dribs and drabs, without cutlery????) The wine was horribly overpriced and the food also overpriced, from a table of six only one person enjoyed their meal!
I wish we had gone to Burger King !!!!!
