I'm going to join in on the "service needs to improve" bandwagon that seems to be the theme of many reviews here. However, although I believe the St. Regis can do better, this is still a VERY fantastic resort, and we absolutely would go back.
My Take on the great and the not so great:
* Upgraded to a HUGE 1 bedroom suite upon arrival thanks to our SPG status. I will note that because of a lot of reviews here suggesting a room close to the plantation house, we almost missed this opportunity because we made the request on our pre-arrival form. I don't quite get everyone complaining on this site about the size of the grounds. Even if you do have to walk, what a wonderful walk it is on wooden paths through a rain forest. 10 minutes max. You are on vacation in paradise people; enjoy it! Otherwise, golf cart service was fine for us when necessary.
* Communication needs to improve amongst all areas of the resort. This is the key to better service. For example: Because of our upgrade, we were given free "butler service". We are told our butler would come by the room to introduce himself to "just call, whatever you need, the Butler will handle." The Butler never came by and, when we called for various things (reservations, etc.) we were always transferred to handle the changes/requests ourselves. Also, I avoided getting coffee service in the room every morning because frankly, just didn't want to keep spending more $$$. How annoyed was I when I found out upon check-out that was included free of charge! Every morning I got dressed and walked up to the plantation house lobby for coffee when I would have much rather been relaxing on our balcony. Finally, you apparently need reservations for every meal. We made a reservation for new years on our pre arrival form but often ended up waiting to eat because we had no reservations. Again, told one thing by butler service and found out otherwise once we arrived to dine. We just couldn't figure out what the butler service really did that made it special.
* Spa= awesome facilities but SO expensive. I stuck with a facial and it was really great. However, while waiting for my treatment in the relaxation area, there were no clean glasses for water or tea and, I never saw one person in that area beyond checking in.
* The pre-arrival form seems to be nothing but a novelty. No idea why we needed to complete in advance because we ended up having to remake all reservations for dinner, spa, etc. I actually made my own spa reservation online even though I'd requested one of the form.
* Food. Everything is expensive and some of it is NOT worth the price. All meals at Fern were excellent and Molasses was good as well. But, Seagrapes is pretty average for what they're charging. Across the board, ingredients missing more than once, or included in things that weren't listed on the menu. (No whip cream with waffles from room service, no olives in greek salad at pool, tomatoes in sandwiches that weren't listed on menu, "crispy" shrimp coming out as steamed. ) Not enough to complain but a 5 star resort should be getting this right every time.
* Pool was awesome but just be prepared to spend $18.00 for a Pina Colada. Ouch.
* Beach is still beautiful even though it is more murky than expected.
* We screwed up and did NOT stop at Ralph's before the turn to the road to the resort like others suggested. We regret that because after 5 days without leaving the resort, those $5 Diet Cokes and $18 cocktails add up. Make sure you do this to stock up on wine, drinks, etc. Otherwise, you'll pay for it.
* The resort is really isolated like others suggest. We didn't mind this but if you have big plans for exploring Puerto Rico, I might stay elsewhere unless you rent a car.

This is an amazing resort that will get it completely right soon; the staff is very friendly and wants to please. Even with the above, we'd go back because it is such a beautiful, luxurious, relaxing place worth a high price tag.

Room Tip: Suite 1122 close to pool and 5 minutes to Plantation House. Excellent ocean view.

Saludos from St. Regis Bahía Beach -

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments regarding your recent stay.

We are delighted that you and your family had such a wonderful experience.

Our staff is very passionate about creating the true St. Regis experience – a meaningful journey with extraordinary service. We are, however, concerned with your disappointment regarding pricing throughout the resort, and are working to change that perception.

We look forward to welcoming you and your family back to your home away from home, the St. Regis Bahía Beach, in the near future.

Thank you for the gift of feedback and the opportunity to address your concerns.

We went in between Christmas and NewYear's, several couples, with children of all ages (2-18). The stay was very nice, we enjoyed it; it was not perfect but a very good place. Did see some famous people as well.
POSITIVE:
- very expansive grounds, lots of space
- relaxed
- big rooms; nice amenities (we were in a Casa Atlantico - definitely the place to be
- SandDollar beach - a bit further down, but very nice, no algae
- we enjoyed the food at both Fern and Molasses (separate reviews)
- the spa was very nice - but very expensive

Issues:
- as many reviewers pointed out: service has room to improve for sure
- it's far out - either you stay there more of the time; or have a rental car if you want to get into San Juan or explore the island. Staying in the resort was just fine with us.
- a number of apparent NewYorkers sitting/walking around the pool area on their cell phones, complaining about too many things while on vacation
- the occupation of pool chairs should change; all chairs are taken, but rarely are more than 25 % ever occupied. Guests arrive early in the morning, mark chairs as theirs and then disappear. There should be a mechanism that chairs not used for 90 min should be freed up

This resort is a gem. The grounds are gorgeous and the staff is very helpful and friendly. There are a few restaurants in the resort that are delicious, really enjoyed the brunch at Fern and dinner at Molasses. The room service is pretty good too. We were upgraded to a beach view suite for SPG status, even on a holiday weekend, this was a treat. The butler service with unlimited french press tea and coffee was a dream! A negative was the beach, because the water was very murky. This was due to recent hurricanes and the location of the beach because at the same time in San Juan, the water was blue and swim-able. Also, be sure to make use of the resort amenities, like bike rentals and kayaks, as they are included in the resort fee.

I just returned from a week long stay at the resort. From the moment we got to the large stunning resort we truly felt taken care of. Here are brief breakdowns on our stay:

Rooms / Bathroom: We had a suite in which there was a sitting area that connected to a room with a king size bed. The rooms were immaculately cleaned and they opened up to a very generously sized balcony. The sliding doors opened up and make the room even larger and also allowed us to view the gorgeous scenery. There was a table and couch outside that's perfect for reading a book and relaxing. The bathrooms are stunning! Not only are their TVs in the mirrors but the shower is literally the size of a small room. There is also a large soak tub by the shower.

Food: I had read a previous post that said there wasn't a breakfast buffet but there was one when we stayed there at SeaGrapes. The buffet was good but the breakfast at Fern was absolutely amazing. Their french toast is literally the best I've ever had. The service was also top notch. We also had a great dinner at SeaGrapes (highly recommend the skirt steak) as well as a great Christmas meal at Molasses. Room service was good and was delivered in less than 30 min.

Kids: When we got to our room there was a crib set up for our daughter which is something I requested before we checked in. Even though we were traveling with 2 small children we always felt like there were things for us to do. As previous people have mentioned the property is set on over 500 acres and you can get bikes from the boat house and enjoy the beautiful scenery. If your kids are to young to ride a bike they have attachments so that they can sit behind the bike. This was a great way for us to explore the whole resort. They also have a kids club called the Iguana Club. While my daughter was to young to stay by herself, we were allowed to use their facilities. They have a basketball court, play ground, video game room, craft room, movie room, and reading room. It was great!!

I would 100% recommend this hotel/resort. I can't wait to spend time there again.

I'll just say this resort is overrated. The rooms are quite nice, and the pool is great. However, I will say that the beach is not so nice (lots of run off, and theres garbage washed up all on it), the service at the restaurants is really slow. Overall I would say the resort is "average" however given the price that you pay for a room and for meals...etc I expect a lot more.

Dear Guest,

Saludos from St. Regis Bahía Beach -

Thank you for taking the time to post your thoughts regarding your recent stay with us.

We apologize that you were not able to fully enjoy the beach. The two rivers which enhance our spectacular tropical surroundings only affect the beach water occasionally, when the weather and tide are very adverse. In addition, we have a diligent sand sweeping program.

Although we are happy that you enjoyed our sophisticated guest rooms and pool area, we do apologize that you left dissatisfied.

Thank you for the gift of feedback and the opportunity to address your concerns.
