The St. Regis Bahia Beach Resort, Puerto Rico
Ranked #1 of 4 Hotels in Rio Grande
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 5 May 2014

Stayed here for 4 nights with my wife and two infants.

HOTEL DECOR:
beautiful, tastefully decorated in the modern plantation style, blending very well with the natural beauty of the surrounding rain forest. there is a main plantation house (lobby, bar, fern restaurant, concierge, check in) and the surrounding rooms are built in clustered buildings which are very nicely disguised with foliage to give the feeling of intimicy and privacy but activities are not far from each other. buildings are connected by wooden boardwalks which wind through the tropical landscaping - very nice. the online pictures are accurate.

entire hotel is within a 480 acre eco preverve with lakes and protected woodlands. unfortunately, they are developing the site with private estates and condos (doesn't ruin the experience at hte st regis however). several nature hikes are avail and highly recommended.

RESTAURANTS:
Fern: main restaurant, only one open for breakfast. breakfast is good, excellent view of beach from patio and refershing breezes on the patio. dinner is more upscale, menu is quite good, very well done and fairly priced.

Poolside restaurant: typical, but well done, burgers, nachos, pizza, salads, wraps, juices etc. food is delivered pooside, which is convenient.

Molassis: advertised as the 3rd restaurant, but really is a 10-15 min walk to the adjacent golf club house. good food, modern twist on authentic puerto rican food.

off camps options are a hike, need a car or taxi.

POOL AREA:
outstanding! large pool with several subdivisions separated by mini waterfalls, varying between 1 ft and 5 ft depth. lots of well manicured vegetation allowing for privacy and shade. plenty of lounge chairs, private cabanas available for rent (also with TV's, sofas and fridges etc). towel service is excellent, they will cean up and set up for you without having to ask. kudos to the staff here!

BEACH:
pluses: absolute privacy, stretching for 2+ miles, soft sand. service (towels, food, kids toys) is outstanding. kudos to the staff here!
minuses: rough water, no one really swims.

ROOMS:
as expected, well appointed, spacious and great ammenities (excellent quality toiletries, ipod dock etc). needless to say, clean linens and beautiful bathrooms. soft lighting throughout. terrace was very enjoyable with either ocean for forest views, enjoyed complimentary morning coffee/tea with newpaper and morning sounds of birds!

we had a luxury suite highly recommended with kids. living room was large and comfortable. 2 full bathrooms, also large and very nicely appointed. bedroom king bed was comfy. plenty of storage, incl a full dresser, walk in closet and other storage areas.

STAFF:
this is where the hotel really shines. to begin with, the butler service is exceptional! kudos to all our butlers! they unpacked for us, offered to pack us at departure, bring coffee/tea, and generally help with whateve ris needed (reservations, needed items, etc). all butlers we had were outstanding! courteous, professional, always followed up ina very timely fashion. we were more than satisfied, and simply very impressed.

our maid (who we never saw or met) was outstanding as well. she noticed we were using water to make baby formula and left us a 6 pack in our wet bar. she would wash our baby bottles, fold clothes for my wife and kids and leave us little treats every evening. very, very thoughtful. we truly appreciated it.

we were given a kids package (rubber duckie, towels, bath wash, bath tube, 2 pack and plays, dish washing soap, brush, cleared our mini bar fridge, etc) all at no charge. to give you an idea of the attentivness and thoughtfulness, the sheet in the pack and plays were changed every day!

to not wake our babies, our room service delivery person did not ring the doorbell, but had the hotel call our room to tell us they were waiting outside!

by the 2nd day, the staff knew our names and our kids, which made us feel very welcome.

all the staff were outstanding - attentive, curteous, helpful, friendly and not obtrusive, without exception. for us, this is the best part about staying at a st regis.

AMMENITIES, incl SPA:
Spa: as expected, beautiful with a full range of services. my haircut was outstanding (former salon owner from ritz carlton in san juan).

Kids playroom (Iguana club): best Ive ever seen. All kinds of ammenities (pool table, fooz ball, arts and crafts room, basketball courts). Staff (young women) were so sweet with the kids! kudos to them as well!

Water sports/nature center: 10-15 min walk from the hotel. kayaking, paddle boarding, all included. very pretty surroundings and excellent facilities.

LOCATION:
designed to be private, secluded and isolated from the hustle and bustle of san juan. very relaxing, and rejuvinating. there is a respect for and intimacy with nature which is very thoughtfully designed (only caribbean and one of 12 resorts worldwide approved by the audobon society) and unique.

san juan is 30 min away (highway), rio grande (smalll town) is a 5-10 min car ride.

VALUE:
a fair value for the price, spa services are somewhat overpriced, and the restaurants are fairly priced, rooms and hotel ammenities are well priced.

WOULD WE RETURN?
Yes, in fact, my wife wants to buy a retirement home here...

Room Tip: families: recommend a suite buildings 1, 2, 3 are closest to the pool and main building building 9...

Where to begin - All of the pictures online are even more breathtaking in person. Baja has committed to the preservation of nature and it shows when walking around this remarkable beautiful resort. Private and relaxing, Baja has everything you need and once here you never want to leave. Nature trails, golf, pool, beach, the boat house has all activities and they also book excursions around PR. Located right by El Yunque the rain forest. You will not be disappointed.

The property is absolutely gorgeous! Let's begin with the positives and quite honestly it is 90% positive. The staff when arriving is not only attentive but ready to greet you and escort you to the reception desk for check-in. We had a 1 bedroom suite with an ocean view that was very nice and was tastefully decorated for a hotel. It was immaculate which is always a plus and our butler (did not use this service although it came with the room) showed us the features in the room but wanted to make sure it was also clean. This trip was solely for R&R and we did find it here at the St. Regis. The pool area was clean and the staff around the people were very attentive, if you require that of them. There are walking trails for you to walk or bike, arrangements to go into Old San Juan for a day trip or just stay on property and go to the spa. It is NOT the best spa we have ever been to but it was nice enough for what this trip was for. Again, this trip was solely for R&R so if people reading this are looking for nightlife, lots of things to do and keep you busy then I would not recommend staying here. The biggest issue we had was the inconsistency of the restaurant, FERN, which is a Jean-George restaurant. NOW, I know we all have expectations and rightfully so and I am NOT slamming the restaurant but just pointing out a few things. One, you are staying at the St. Regis which is a Category 7 for people who are SPG members and we do expect top notch dining at this level; Two, the inconsistency of the food coming out. Sometimes it was cold or overcooked which we experienced. We did a wine paring one night with the tasting menu and the waiter would bring our food but we would constantly have to remind him to bring the wine that was supposed to compliment the entree. It was frustrating. Third, it seemed on certain nights (we were there all 5) that the staff were not always in sync. We were lucky that we had for 3 straight nights one waitress who was just amazing. If I could have written her name down I would kindly give her the accolades she truly does deserve. I would like to say that BOTH managers that we dealt with in the restaurant were wonderful. The reason we can say that was not because we were complaining but because they visited every table each night to speak to you. That was a nice touch! AND, in all fairness to them they, we believe, want to make sure that your experience is a positive one. NOW, we did see people leave the restaurant in disgust and hear people complaining about the food and staff which I mentioned above and that is the only wrinkle in my review as it is warranted. Two last things, there is not a shop on site that you can purchase magazines or small items where you typically find in other hotels which I thought was a bit odd and also FERN is the main and only true restaurant to eat at. There are 2 other places to eat on site but I would say not for dinner but for lunch or very casual dining.

My wife and I visited this resort as two weeks ago, and we had the time of our lives! The accomodations, staff, and setting were all perfect. We enjoyed spending warm afternoons on the beach, and had no problem reaching a high level of relaxation. We have told all of our friends that this is the spot to stay in if you visit Puerto Rico. I highly recommend this resort. PS - If you are a light sleeper, you may need earplugs due to the coquis crowing at night. I slept like a baby once adjusted.

We (family of four + 2 grandparents) recently stayed at the St. Regis and were more than pleasantly surprised. After staying at a house rental in Dorado, we opted to spend the last two days of a weeklong vacation at this hotel. As starwood preferred guest members, this was our first experience with a St. Regis resort property, using 'cash and points' (for those of you who are Starwood members).

In short, this is the most outstanding hotel we have ever stayed at. One of our two bedrooms was upgraded to a suite, which at nearly 1300 sq feet, with two full bathrooms, and three TVs, was quite extravagant. Complimentary french press tea and coffee were standard. A large pool area was within walking distance and also next to the beach. The white sand beach had an extremely large shallow area that is perfect for kids, and was far better than the beach in Dorado. As other Trip Advisor members have commented, there were a lot of kids in the pool, which we didn't mind (but childless couples may).

Since we maximized our time at the pool and beach, we ended up eating most of our meals poolside and the food was decent and reasonably priced for a hotel of this caliber ($20 or so for a sandwich/burger/salad with protein). We had a car, but did not bother venturing outside the hotel for food once we got here, as we already visited Old San Juan and the nearby rainforest earlier in the week.

The resort fee includes access to the boathouse and our kids loved the kayaking experience on a small enclosed lake. They also had bikes, which we did not take advantage of.

All in all, we considered this hotel a splurge given our usual stays at Sheraton and Westin hotels, and we thought it was well worth it!

From the moment I came through the gate, I knew this was going to be an extraordinary experience.

I was invited to faciliate a retreat for a group that had rented the property and WOW! The beds on the beaches, the groups, activities, food and the service...the service was top notch..never a complaint or hesitation.

Though the resort is first class what was so special was it was such a casual experience, like I was home...never stuffy. Certainly a place that I could stay for weeks!!

Highly recommended!!!

We just returned from a week staying at the St. Regis hotel. We were very impressed by the level of service and attention to detail. We were welcomed very graciously by the staff and given a lot of information about the property. The waitstaff at the pool and the bellmen were fantastic and very helpful. Another highlight was the spa and gym experiences -- both very sophisticated. It is a beautiful property and I truly miss the wonderful coffee each morning. We also enjoyed our excursions arranged through Castillo tours who had a kiosk in the main hotel lobby.

There were only a few downsides -- one major one was the pricing of cocktails, meals, etc. We've stayed at other resorts before, but we were still quite shocked at how expensive it was. Also, there were only 3 restaurants on the property (1 which was fairly mediocre). But I know they are working on plans to expand now. Also, we were somewhat surprised at how many families with small children vacationed there. It did not impact us negatively but being a young couple it would have been nice to have the option for a swim up bar or kid-free pool area.
