“Great beachfront condo. Private beautiful beach. Lush setting nearby rainforest.”
Reviewed 2 February 2010

I rented a two bedroom beachfront condo at the Rio Mar Ocean Villas through oceanvillas.com. Everything was as promised. A friend of mine has stayed at the condos several times, so I had a good idea what to expect and was well prepared to enjoy all the resort had to offer as well as the nearby sights and attractions.
My tips:
Rent a car.
The rainforest El Yunque is right up the road. Bring hiking sneakers/shoes and a disposable rain poncho.
Take a day trip to the nearby island of Culebra. The ferry is a little rough getting there, but it is only $2.50 each way for the hour plus ride. If you don't want to take the ferry, take a flight there, it's worth it. From what I understand from other people's experiences, the ferry is very crowded during the spring and summer, especially on the weekends. In mid-January it was nearly empty and there was no need to buy tickets inadvance nor do you have to get to the dock more than ten minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Do not go to Puerto Rico for the food! The restaurant "Richie's" right up the road from the Rio Mar resort has a gorgeous view, great for at sunset for an early evening dinner. The food is horrible so order very lightly and enjoy the view and setting.
Old San Juan is a quick half hour ride depending on traffic. We ate at "Sofia's" Italian restaurant. Very nice atmosphere, terrible fish and pasta. Stick with the Pizza and salads. "Dragonfly" is sushi and Asian food. Very decent, but overpriced.
Visit the fort "El Morro" in Old San Juan.

The resort:

The roms were extremely decent. The A/C worked well, just a little loud and annoying over your head when you're in bed. The bathrooms were good, everything worked okay. The kitchen was clean and small, all the apliances worked well. There was maid service available for an extra fee. There was free wireless internet as well as flat screen TV's with cable service.
The condos have their own pools and beachfront that were very clean and well maintained and quiet. You could walk five minutes to the hotel beach and pool area. There is waiter service and a beachfront bar. there is an adult only pool as well as a large "all ages" pool with a great slide for the kids. There are volleyball, basketball, and all kinds of activities. There are two golf courses and several tennis courts.

There are decent restaurants in the hotel. Nothing special.
The Casino is tiny, a waste of time.

The beach is very nice and wide and private. The ocean runs shallow and has a nice surf at times.

We had a great time on the beach, by the pools and travelling around the island.

Just wanted to express what a great time we had staying at the Ocean Villas this past week. The location, setting, and all the amenities were exactly as advertised if not better. The booking process through resortvillarentals.com was very easy and the staff responded very quickly. Atalie, the on-site concierge, was very helpful in getting us information on anything we wanted to do and definitely helped make our stay as enjoyable as possible. We will definitely look to come back.

We booked through Xavier Cautino & Victoria of resortvillarentals.com. We originally booked at the Wyndham but read reviews that the hotel was not clean.. We had friends stay here and it was not clean ...Hotel is outdated. We were 2 families with 11 total...

Ocean's 16 is brand new and the villas are huge. We stayed in a 4 bedroom.. They are next to the Ocean Villas..The villa was clean and well furnished. We had some problems with the dishwasher that the property manager did not address and we had to call five days in row... Other small problems and never got a response from them... The Ocean's 16 villas are a short walk to the hotel..We tried to get a golf cart but never heard from the rental office..

We used the concierge from the Wyndham hotel.. They were beyond clueless. One night they set up a reservation for us at the Grillle Room only to get there and it was closed. (oh yeah the shuttle just dropped us and left- no cars around.. Imagine 11 kids at 8 pm very hungry.). By the time someone came back to get us all the Hotel restaurants were full. No one wanted to help... There are not 7 restaurants as the Wyndham quotes.. Very poorly thought-out at such a busy time. A few restaurants were open each night..

We asked concierge if they had any video games/arcade for the kids or nightly activities. They said no.. One night we walked passed the Casino and there was a full scale game room, kids movies every night and an WII & x box room. No one at the hotel had a clue.. They set this up for the holiday quests but never told anyone.. This was great .. but soo strange that no one who worked had any ideas what was happening at the Wyndham... WOW...

Ocean 16 had a great pool and workout area. We never heard from Xavier or Victoria the entire 10 day stay. We thought this was strange as we spent much time prior to planning this trip...

You can get credit at the Wyndham by contacting the front desk. This was great... We could charge things at the hotel . It was hard to get towels but for the most part this was the best part of the hotel.. They got it right...

We took one trip to La Conquistador for dinner.. WOW.. We will try to stay here next time... it was very expensive when we looked here..

Returned from 9 nights at at the Ocean Villas at Rio Mar on 8/11/08. The Villas have the potential to be a fantastic luxury resort. However, the whole place needs some attention. When we arrived, there was absolutely no one around to check us in! We actually found the key in a desk drawer and luckily found a maintenance employee to help us find our room. We basically found the same situation for most of our stay. The so-called concierge was never at her desk, and when she was she was not much help at all. We ended up using the concierge services at the Rio Mar hotel for any info on travel/restaurants, etc. They were extremely helpful and friendly over there.

The pools/hot tub area are absolutely beautiful, but could be maintained better. The infinity pool was not functioning properly for most of our stay, so you couldn't get the entire "infinity" effect. The hot tub was broken for about 2 days out of our stay. Beach was very clean, soft brown sand, nice waves, sandy bottom, beautiful views. Our 2-bedroom unit was very spacious, but could have been cleaner. We found the kitchen cabinets to be quite "sticky" on the outside, some dishes in the cabinets were dirty, etc. Also, the rugs in the bedrooms/living room were stained. The bathrooms were very clean. Overall, not disgusting, but could have been cleaner.

Ate at Palio's at the hotel. Very good. Great wait staff. Also ate at the Grille Room at the golf club. EXTREMELY over-priced! Ate at Richie's about 2 minutes off the property. LOVED IT! Great open-air restaurant on top of a hill with great views!

Went to Old San Juan. Very quaint. Ate at an italian place called Al Dente(?). Excellent! Near the parking garage by the cruise ship pier. Did Rain Forest hike to falls. Okay for something to do, but overrated. Did a sailing trip with East Island Excursions. Lots of fun. Any of the companies would have been great!

Overall, great vacation spot. The villas just need a bit more TLC.

We spent 5 wonderful days and nights at the Ocean Villas in Rio Mar Puerto Rico. While we were next to and enjoyed the ammenties of the Wyndam Rio Mar Resort, the Ocean Villas is not part of the resort.
The Villas (condos) are privately owned and very spacious. The Ocean Villas sit about 30 feet from the beach with 3 pools in between. The Beach is wonderful, a long stretch of deep brown sand with great size waves. My 17 and 13 year old loved it.
The beach was also very private, since the Wyndam had their own beach just down a bit.
Many nice restaurants at the Wyndam, a little pricey, but if you can get off the property there are several within a few miles.
The Ocean villas offered a wonderful driving service called Adames, who will meet you at the airport, and arrange for day trips as well. The El Yunque Rainforest is a must.
One caution, the villas are a little pricey, not for bargain hunters. But if you are looking for privacy, luxury and some nice ammenties, this is the place for you.
PS..two beautiful golf courses surround the property as well

We had the perfect beach vacation for a family of four at the Ocean Villas. We were looking for an upscale resort feel but wanted a kitchen and more space. We booked a two bedroom and the views were incredible. We had a great beach view from the balcony and a spectacular view of the rain forest (misty mountains similar to Hawaii) from the open air walk ways and entrance to our villa. Our bedroom alone was bigger than the size of many hotel rooms. The beds were wonderful.

My fourteen year old son loved the hot tub by the infinity pool looking out to the ocean. It was never crowded. We could walk down to main hotel for cocktails (great pina coladas and they make them virgin for the kids) and activities. The Rio Mar has iguana feedings every moring at 11 am that were so cool! They passed out lettuce to all of us by a pond and numerous wild iguanas came over to our group. Most of the time we enjoyed the beach and pools at the villas. The water was warm and waves were really nice.

The location of the Rio Mar is perfect. The road that leads to El Yunque is right across the street. Drive all the way to the top and hike to the tower. It's a fantastic hike on a nice path through the rainforest. I have a fear of heights and it was no problem because of all the folliage.

It was so nice to have a kitchen at the villas. Food was never an ordeal. We asked our driver to stop at the grocery store on the way in. We will definately go back to the Ocean Villas at Rio Mar. You don't book through the Wyndham. We went through Xavier Cautino at resortvillarental.com. They gave us a great rate and their company has an on site concierge.

It was tough leave but we will return to escape the winters of New Hampshire next year.

The place was gorgeous! The rooms impeccable. The plasma TVs definitely added coolness to it! I was there for my bachelorette party with my girlfriends and the 2 bathrooms definitely made it so much easier!!! The view was stunning!!! Overall, I'd say it was the best possible place we could ever get. And to top it off, they mailed me my precious teddy bear when I forgot it!!! The place is great and so are the people!!! Love it!
