I rented a two bedroom beachfront condo at the Rio Mar Ocean Villas through oceanvillas.com. Everything was as promised. A friend of mine has stayed at the condos several times, so I had a good idea what to expect and was well prepared to enjoy all the resort had to offer as well as the nearby sights and attractions.
Rent a car.
The rainforest El Yunque is right up the road. Bring hiking sneakers/shoes and a disposable rain poncho.
Take a day trip to the nearby island of Culebra. The ferry is a little rough getting there, but it is only $2.50 each way for the hour plus ride. If you don't want to take the ferry, take a flight there, it's worth it. From what I understand from other people's experiences, the ferry is very crowded during the spring and summer, especially on the weekends. In mid-January it was nearly empty and there was no need to buy tickets inadvance nor do you have to get to the dock more than ten minutes before the scheduled departure time.
Do not go to Puerto Rico for the food! The restaurant "Richie's" right up the road from the Rio Mar resort has a gorgeous view, great for at sunset for an early evening dinner. The food is horrible so order very lightly and enjoy the view and setting.
Old San Juan is a quick half hour ride depending on traffic. We ate at "Sofia's" Italian restaurant. Very nice atmosphere, terrible fish and pasta. Stick with the Pizza and salads. "Dragonfly" is sushi and Asian food. Very decent, but overpriced.
Visit the fort "El Morro" in Old San Juan.
The roms were extremely decent. The A/C worked well, just a little loud and annoying over your head when you're in bed. The bathrooms were good, everything worked okay. The kitchen was clean and small, all the apliances worked well. There was maid service available for an extra fee. There was free wireless internet as well as flat screen TV's with cable service.
The condos have their own pools and beachfront that were very clean and well maintained and quiet. You could walk five minutes to the hotel beach and pool area. There is waiter service and a beachfront bar. there is an adult only pool as well as a large "all ages" pool with a great slide for the kids. There are volleyball, basketball, and all kinds of activities. There are two golf courses and several tennis courts.
There are decent restaurants in the hotel. Nothing special.
The Casino is tiny, a waste of time.
The beach is very nice and wide and private. The ocean runs shallow and has a nice surf at times.
We had a great time on the beach, by the pools and travelling around the island.
