“I'm in love with Puerto Rico and this resort huge reason why.”

We recently went to Puerto Rico for a business trip. I decided to make most of trip. From moment I walked up to the open air lobby my breath was taken away! The bungalow was facing this beautiful garden where every morning I seen iguanas and peacocks. Room was just as stunning. Spacious shower, and large sitting area. Called room service every morning for breakfast. They and rest of the staff were exceptionally professional and sweet. LOVED THE STAFF!!! It was a very short walk through the equally beautiful resort to private beach.

Only small downfall, little pricey for food. I mean restaurants and room service was excellent. But just a little on high side. Still it was a splurge and I WILL be back with my family!

By far one of the best trips ever!

I stayed here for 3 nights in April 2012 with my husband. Just some background - we stayed at the Gran Melia for my husband's annual incentive trip, so the entire stay was free of charge. We have traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and have stayed at many different resorts, typically RIUs. This was our second time to Puerto Rico - the first time staying at the El Conquistador.

Check-in/Rooms: The hotel set-up a group check-in in the ballroom for the 800+ people who would be arriving as part of the incentive trip. It was a breeze, we received our room key and a bellman was immediately available to escort us to our room with our luggage. Our room was 1508. We opened the door to find two double beds. We were not told this when we received our room key and they knew we were traveling as husband/wife. We called the front desk. We first received voicemail and then was transferred and hung-up on. After the third attempt, someone told us they would call with a king room was available. After waiting about 30 minutes, we walked down to the group check-in area and was told that there were no king beds left in the entire resort. Sorry but there was nothing they could do.

The room was on the second floor. It did not smell musty or moldy at all. The room had no view - we looked down on the sidewalk and the maintenance hut/ice machine. The furniture was old and showing signs of wear (scratches, stains, etc.) but I was happy that the linens were 100% crisp, clean and relatively soft. The beds were very comfortable. However, the room felt dirty. The crown molding along the floor in the bathroom had about an inch or more of dust/dirt - the shower curtain had mold spots on it - there was a piece of trash that stayed near the couch our entire stay. It felt surface cleaned, but never deep cleaned.

Food: The staff at the pool bar/grill is very unhappy for some reason. We noticed this our entire stay. They looked miserable and never smiled or engaged/interacted with the guests. We tried to strike up a conversation, only to be ignored. The grill is way too small to accommodate all of the pool guests so they were running around like crazy. Our drinks took about 10 minutes and our waiter forgot our order and then gave us attitude when we asked (after about 30 minutes) if our order was close to being ready.

In the mornings, a breakfast buffet was set up for the group. The food was ice cold, the eggs were made from powder, etc. The only thing descent were the made-to-order omelets but some of the folks making the omelets looked like they had never made an omelet in their life... it was the running joke about what kind of "scramble" you might receive that morning. Sometimes burnt - sometimes the eggs were runny - etc.

During the evenings, we had planned company dinners. One night, the food was fabulous - lobster tail and seafood! The night of the company's award banquet, the food was inedible. A tiny steak, which was ice cold, and asparagus that was raw. Service was still an issue at the banquet - we were supposed to have wine with dinner, but getting a waiter to bring it to you was impossible - do had to get up and go to the bar during the presentation. Also, the lights in the banquet facility went off about 5 times during the event - not sure why, but was not weather related. Folks also complained that the bathrooms were not clean and overflowing.

Grounds: I loved the lobby area, especially at night. There are candles everywhere, incense burning and it was very pretty and romantic. I think the lobby and the lobby bathrooms are the best thing about the entire resort! The pool is ok - nothing great compared to other resorts we've stayed. The beach is pretty awful. We tried to sit down at the beach and were covered with swarms of nats and flies.

Throughout the resort, there was a lot of trash laying around from where guests had drinks, etc. and no one came by to pick it up. We saw a lot of outdoor lawn maintenance going on, but never saw anyone cleaning the common areas.

Also, hope you like "house" music. In the lobby and around the pool, there is a DJ blaring music from about noon on. I didn't mind this at the pool, but in the lobby area, it was hard to relax in the beautiful cabanas because of the constant pounding of the music.

Casino: There is none. They closed it two months ago and we were told that it was robbed.

Conclusion: We had extended our trip by one night after the "work" portion of the trip and was planning on paying out of pocket for the full resort rate (which is crazy high). We cancelled our reservation for the night, hopped in a cab and stayed at the El Conquistador for the same price. At least there, you get nice decor, beautiful views and a real beach with activities. We were so happy to be leaving the resort.

I feel bad writing this review, as there were many nice employees at the Gran Melia who truly wanted us to have a good time. However, they were in the minority.

We were told by a local that the hotel is in severe financial distress and had laid off a large number of employees a few months back. Many fear the property is going to close all together. As well, we also found out that 3 employees were fired during our stay for stealing guest's electronics out of their room.

I would not return to this resort and would not recommend it based on my experience. Feel free to email me with questions.

The drive to this particular hotel is a long one, about 45 minutes and often you feel like the road you are on cannot be right as is very dark (at night obviosly). It will cost you $15/day to park at the hotel (unless you are a vacation member then it is free)

Although we are part of the vacation club we arrived a day early due to flights so we stayed at the hotel for the first night, check in was great, although they don't offer drinks on arrival. It was relativly pain free and the front desk attendant was nice and quite knowledgable. There was nowhere to get food after 11 pm ( so we were very hungry after traveling for 12 hours) We waited quite some time for some assiatance to our room with our bags, as we didn't know where we were going and it was quite a ways, apparently you wait at the front of the hotel for a belman to pick you up (which we were not told), While we were waiting there were 4 young men that worked for the hotel right by us and none of them even acknowledged we existed, not what is expected of melia hotels.

Finially made it to our room, beautifuly decorated, very big, very comfortable. We decided to go to the lobby bar for a drink as it had been such a long day. 2 highballs and a pop cost $21 OUCH!!! note - you wont want to stay at the hotel and drink unless you have money to burn.

The next day the service (or lack there of) continued as we called for assistance in moving us over to the vacation club, after 1 1/2 hours and 5 phone calls later, we began walking AGAIN. Finally got checked into our hotel room after un unfriendly check in process (other than the wonderful guy that finially offered us something to drink ).

The room : 1 bedroom suite,on lower level - BEAUTIFUL!!! large, very modern, full kitchen including cook top, fridge, toaster, dishes etc. jacuzzi tub, large shower, kitchen, large patio and sitting area.

Pool area is beautiful, bar only open on certain days, seems to be a hit and miss as to when the towels place will be open. When we did see staff they were quite often huddeled and visiting with each other.

The beach - apparently by the hotel side the beach is quite rocky in the water but at the vacation side, although no beach set up for sitting (drag a cchair or 2 down) the sand in the water is soft and very nice. if you walk slow you can often see small fish swimming at your feet.

the grounds: are beautiful, lush and green, well kept and very clean.

First day we ventured out to get soem groceries for breakfasts and lunches, as well as alcohol for pool drinks as is once again quite expensive to drink at the resort. NOTE: the grocery stores are also the liquor stores.

I've been coming here for the past 6 years in May. This is definitely one of our favorite trips of the year. The resort is tucked away in a gated property. I stay in the condos as part of the vacation club. The resort is on a beautiful property. The main pool is gorgeous. The staff is very attentive but not overbearing. Don't get me wrong, its not the Waldorf by any means. If you want a drink from the pool bar you will have to get up off your chair & get it yourself. When I come here its for the location, privacy & the pool. They also have a great spa. The gym is nothing to brag about, but they do offer one. On weekends they have live latin jazz bands that are excellent. The food on the other hand is not that great. My wife & I always opt to go to local establishments where the food is a lot better & better priced. All in all we will continue to come here for our May get away... Hope this helps.

May, 2012 was our second trip back to this resort, and it's gotten even better since we went in 2008. We splurged on the Red Level service, which entitles you to free breakfast at the Soleil Cafe (which was awesome for myself non-vegetarian, and my husband who is a strict vegetarian), access to the adult-only pool with cabana beds, and h'ordeuvres and happy hour in the evening with free alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and great snacks to get you ready for dinner. Best of all, the service at this hotel is fantastic. We had a slight mix up with our reservation, but staff went out of their way to ensure we got everything we expected and MORE. This was our 'babymoon', so our last vacation before our first child, and we can't wait to bring our little peanut back with us. One of the most relaxing vacations we've ever had, with great service.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean front room - or you can go to the vacation club side (attached to the resort, just...

Stayed here during a four day trip. Immediately noticed a horrible moldy smell in our room. a/c wouldn't quit running, tub stopper broken and leg of bed fell off!! Customer service was inconsistent at best and rude at worst. Feral cat brought us a nice rat outside our door for breakfast! Bar service impossible, and don't plan on even a minor injury as there are no medical supplies. No casino as advertised and a rainy day equals doing nothing! Repeated power problems in conference facilities. Returning to Bahamas next time!!!

The top three reasons to choose a resort! We have been to many resorts all over the world and by far, the staff, resort, amenities, etc... at this resort were excellent to say the least. Beginning with our check in at Red Level where, by the way, we were introduced to our butler Tony, to the every day coddling at the pool & restaurants by Tony & the rest of the staff, we enjoyed celebrating my wifes 60th. Birthday. We relaxed & unwound, I did it with a round of golf at Donald Trumps PGA course on the property and my wife enjoyed the spa, we never even got to see San Juan.

Room Tip: Stay at Red Level!
