“Our favorite Lake District stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2013 via mobile

Our family keep going back here. Second stay this year and just as enjoyable as the last time.

Great walks for fans of the quieter northern lakes. Fabulous to see the Ospreys this time. Fun at Go Ape at Whinlatter Park with my 14 year old and another trip to the climbing wall. Plus - plenty of football on the village green, dog walks, and sleep!

This was our first visit to the Lake District after an 8 year break. This time we wanted to stay away from the "honey pots" (Keswick, Ambleside etc) and decided to try Bassenthwaite which is close to the edge of the park. Also we wanted to try something different, instead of staying in a B&B or hotel we opted for an active working farm; "Bassenthwaite Hall Farm". We stayed in Hall Farm Cottage which is right in the middle of the farm. We were made to feel truly welcome by Allison and her family who were more than happy to show us around. There was plenty going on with the cattle, sheep, hens and ducks; a great experience for city dwellers like ourselves. The facilities were very good in the cottage and we had a very comfortable stay. The location is in easy reach of Keswick and all the usual tourist - hiking activities!

Last minute stay in this fab cottage where Alison was on hand to see to our every need.
Arrived late in the evening to a warm comfortable cottage with everything we needed to enjoy a few days home from home! The new bath/ shower rooms are fab its been about 5 years since we last stayed but felt like it was just yesterday!!!!
Highly recommend, kids loved it as usual.
Big thanks to Alison for making our stay perfect, cant wait to go back .

I spent 3 nights in Bassenthwaite with my wife and 10-year old daughter. The "bed" and the "breakfast" part of this B&B were fine, but the setting and the owner were fantastic. Alison Trafford really looks out for her guests on an individual level - she went out of her way to buy specific biscuits that our daughter likes, and Alison made sure that she felt welcome to look in on goings on at the farm. A new calf was born the day we arrived, and there were two week old ducklings in the shed. Our daughter's waking words in the morning were "I need to go and check on the ducklings!". The adult ducks add cheer to the already bucolic setting of the farm adjacent to the stream that runs past the farm. Our daughter loved to wade in the stream, entertained by the ducks. It was experiences like these that made the visit for us. The 3-person room in the farmhouse was fine, if a little cosy. (Ample stock of coffee/tea making supplies was appreciated.) No en suite bathroom, but with two bathrooms across the hallway, this wasn't a problem for us. Breakfast was good, perhaps more 'pub' than 'gastro', but that was just fine. For those that care, free wifi was available, with patchy connections in the room but consistently workable connections in the lounge. The location of the village is good for being a little away from the bustle. Very little traffic at all in Bassenthwaite Village, and a 10-15 minute drive into Keswick. We didn't take advantage of the pub 100 yards down the street, but it looked welcoming.

We thoroughly recommend Bassenthwaite Hall B & B. You get a very friendly welcome, comfortable accommodation and an excellent breakfast. All this in delightful surroundings superbly located for the Northern Lakes.

What a great place, fabulous hosts an wonderful accomadation. I fully recommend staying here. Great location for a quality country pub too, which serves great food as we found till at least 21:00.
The hosts at Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, were more than helpful and willing and generous on more than one occasion. If there had to be a draw back it was having to leave such an area to go home.

If you are looking for a fabulous stay in the Lakes District with room to breathe this is the place for you. We stayed in the 300yr+ farmhouse in this small quiet village not overrun with tourists and were spoilt from the moment we arrived. Fantastic breakfast thick cut bacon cumberland sausage + all the usual goodies. Allison (host) bought apple juice especially for James our 12 yr old upon discovering he didn't like orange juice, a fabulous surprise. She treated him like a grandson finding a net for him to fish for minnows in the creek outside the b&b a wonderfully peaceful place where we sat and recuperated our energies for another day's walking sightseeing or just to stroll up to the pub for great food 2 minutes away. If you have kids I couldn't reccomend this place highly enough it was small and friendly we could relax almost like being at home didn't have to worry about James or traffic. There are ducks and if you visit at the right time lambs to feed or a newborn calf to see. A fabulous start to a months holiday touring the UK and one of the highlights of our trip
