The Lake District Wildlife Park

Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: A walk on the wild side just a 10 minute drive from Keswick. With the backdrop of the Skiddaw massif the emphasis is very much on conservation, education and engaging with visitors - our Keepers are keen to talk and enjoy passing on their knowledge and enthusiasm. Wander around our beautiful 24 acre parkland and see over 100 species. The magical Bird of Prey flying displays have been a regular feature since the park opened and we have gathered an eclectic mix of over 100 species from Anaconda to Zebra. The Granddad of the park is Brian the Lar Gibbon - he is the oldest in Europe and has pride of place in the centre of the park where he and his family can be seen swinging from the massive Oak tree. We are members of BIAZA and over the years we have successfully worked with Zoo stud books to breed species including Lynx, Asian Fishing Cats and Ring Tailed Lemurs to name just three.

Excellent attraction and reasonably priced. The knowledge of the staff was first class and they made us all feel very welcome. It was a wet day but still busy and it is worth looking it out when you are in the area

It was nice sunny day and we were staying right next door. It was a lovely day out and the owners knowledge and skill with the birds of pray was brilliant

This place isn't huge but has a great range of animals from Donkeys to Lemurs. Meerkats to Red Pandas. Kids will especially like it. It is not on the large side but that makes it better, less distance to walk. It even has a soft play area for the kids.

Great way to spend a morning or afternoon.

So glad they didn't turn the land into a golf course.

If you're staying in the Northern Lake District with young kids and are stuck for something to do, please visit The Lake District Wildlife Park (Trotters). I thought it was just a sort of petting zoo with standard farm animals which I only like when they're cooked and on a plate in front of me, but this is a pukka wildlife park with Tapirs, various small primates, birds of prey, lizards and reptiles.

I enjoyed the demonstrations best. The guy doing the bird of prey demos is very interesting. The owls were flying millimetres away from our heads. Very special During a fascinating meet and greet reptiles session, I got hold a fast tortoise (yes, really), a little dragon thing and a couple of snakes (a lovely experience actually - one of them curled up like a lap dog in my coat).

I was a little concerned about the massive eagles, etc. chained to posts so I asked about it and the handler said that they're exercised regularly and always come back so they obviously are onto a good thing compared to slugging it out in the wild. Being chained up for a bit is clearly a small price to pay - a bit like us having to work in call centres or down mines to pay the bills I guess...
