“Food and service second to none”

We are just back from five nights holiday in Bassenthwaite. Armathwaite Hall is currently rated fourth out of five Bassenthwaite hotels by tripadvisor. Do not let this put you off. All the Bassenthwaite hotels must be superb for Armathwaite Hall is a terrific hotel and the hotel really made the holiday for us! It rained constantly for three days so we ventured out each morning sustained by an excellent breakfast and returned to the hotel looking forward to fine food. We were never disappointed. We ate in the dining room, overlooking the lake, each day as part of our package. The menu changed every evening. There were about eight main courses inc vegetarian options. Coffee , tea, hot chocolate etc could be taken in a lounge. The service was impeccable and the waiters were good natured and helpful. At nearly £50 full price the food was wonderful but expensive. The brasserie beside the spa (but accessible from the hotel) is a cheaper alternative. They serve children's meals there too and in the hotel there is a listening/babysitting service for parents. The spa offers a lot of treatments and the pool and hot tub are free to guests but we were too busy tramping about the lakes to take advantage ot them. Our bedroom was a superior room but had a poor view over the back (room 171) and no air conditioning. The beds were big and high. There is a turn down service every night. Towels were changed daily. Biscuits were constantly replenished. The rooms were immaculate. There are two large lounges and a spacious bar so plenty of places to sit downstairs in the main part of the hotel. There is good parking and beautiful grounds. Wedding receptions take place and you hardly know they are there unless you see the bride. It was a lovely experience to stay in Armathwaite Hall. The staff did everything to make our stay an enjoyable one and they succeeded....despite the weather!

We went for midweek lunch in June 2010 on some sort of restaurant offer voucher from a national newspaper, booked in advance. Arrived a littel late but absolutely no problem. Treated very well, not stuffed into a corner as "riff raff". Served by a very experienced and decent "aged retainer" -and doesn't experience show!! Lovely dining room with window table, wonderful food , excellent service and coffee on the terace overlooking the lake. Excellent parking arrangements and very attractive builing and setting.Thank you so much, a wonderful start to our three day break in the lakes.

Myself and my wife have just returned from a 5 night stay at Armathwaite Hall. We have both travelled all over the world, and the level of food, customer service, setting and facilities are second to none here. My wife is vegan, and we generally face raised eyebrows and frowns when asking for a vegan option on the menu - not so here. Indeed, the chef not only produced a vegan menu every night we dined in the lakeside restaurant, but the waiting on staff attentively checked that all ingredients were vegan friendly. The food was superb - even the non vegan options (of which there are many!). Our experience was enhanced by fantastic weather every day except one, which meant that, instead of hiking around the fells as we usually do, we ventured out very little in order to take advantage of the facilities, particularly the pool, gym and outdoor hot tub, and general feeling of tranquility around the gardens. We originally stayed in a club room, near to the spa and overlooking part of the garden, with facilities such as plasma TV, quality Roberts Ipod dock, and flatscreen TV in the bathroom. We moved after the first night because there were some very noisy children next door - not the hotel's fault, and they were accomodating, moving all our belongings to a more traditional room in the older main building, overlooking the deer park. The equipment in the room was not quite up to the same standard as the club room, but that was no problem and in my view the new room was more atmospheric with a fantastic view. The only negative was that on our third day, a couple arrived to stay in the room opposite ours with a very young baby, who proceeded to cry most of the remainder of the day and on other occasions. Because we had been moved to an area in which there were supposed to be no children for the rest of our stay, we were less than happy- we had gone for complete R&R - however, we discovered that this was not the hotel's fault, this couple had not said they were bringing a child and had simply turned up with the child, putting the hotel in a difficult position as there were no other rooms to reallocate this couple to. A word of caution - we ventured out on the nights we were not dining in the Lakeside restaurant at Armathwaite, and both meals, at the nearby Castle Inn and Pheasant Inn respectively, were poor in terms of quality and service; on reflection we should have stayed at Armathwaite and eaten at the more informal bistro on the 2 nights we were not dining in the Lakeside restaurant. The views from the Lakeside restaurant, at breakfast and dinner, are stunning - truly wonderful. All in all, a first class experience and we cant wait to return.

Room Tip: for proximity to spa and gym - stay in club room, for more traditional setting, probably away from c...

Stayed at Armathwaite hall July 2011. Got an amazing deal including dinner. The room was very well equipped and the bed was very comfortable although the bathroom was a little small and the shower enclosure was rather limiting! I think that the rooms in the main hotel are probably a lot larger and less like an upmarket motel.
Dinner was a lovely experience. The waiting staff were very efficient, knowledgeable and most welcoming. The dining room is so traditional and very beautiful. We liked the dress code and were very pleased to see that everyone had bothered to make a lot of effort. (def no jeans trainers etc.) The choice on the menu was excellent and the food was beautifully presented and of excellent quality. The traditional service was most appreciated.
The gardens are lovely and the spa (though we are not spa people) was very nicely done. Very modern but hidden from the rest of the hotel. Lovely tennis court too. We were lucky enough to enjoy 3 days of unbroken sunshine in the lakes and probably saw the gardens at their best. All in all a lovely stay and we will return with our dog who was welcome.

Fantastic Hotel and The Spa is amazing. Never to busy so you feel extra special. Wonderful treatments. A place I like to go one my own for a couple of days. Don't want to bring the husband and kids as its my sanctuary.

Went to this hotel for my sister's wedding, stayed two nights as a wedding package and had a fantasic time. Beautiful hotel in stunning grounds leading right to the edge of Bassenthwaite lake .Fabulous setting for photographs. The food was fantastic, accomodation wonderful and the staff just couldn't. do enough. If i have one small niggle it was that our room was too warm, but i cannot recommend this hotel enough, especially for a wedding

I visited Armathwaite Hall as part of a family group of 16 people, which was a treat from my in laws to celebrate their anniversary. My husband and I are both vegetarian and I am currently eight month’s pregnant.

On looking at the menu online for the Saturday evening when we were dining in the Lake View Restaurant I noticed there was only one option available with a cheese unsuitable during pregnancy. I contacted the hotel to ask for alternative options, explaining that we were happy to choose in advance, and providing suggestions. I also requested options for the Friday evening when we were arriving late and required as part of our booking conditions to have room service at the hotel.

It would take a staggering eight emails and a phonecall to Simon Steele to eventually receive the hotel’s vegetarian menu. However when we turned up on the Friday evening the platter was 90% cheese only one of which was suitable during pregnancy. I could therefore not eat the meal and my husband had a slightly upset stomach during the night.

When eating in the restaurant the next day we were surprised to discover the ‘full vegetarian menu’ we had been sent was not offered but two alternatives vegetable lasagna and a cranberry nut roast, hardly the inspiring cuisine to be expected for £50 a head excluding drinks. My lasagna consisted of limp vegetables in a plain tomato sauce with pasta sheets, incredibly dull and lacking in imagination.

Breakfast was also showed no regard for vegetarians with meat and fruit being served on the same platter. We were in a difficult position to complain as we did not wish to appear ungrateful to our relatives, but we found the whole situation incredibly disappointing as ‘foodie people’ who really enjoy eating out.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone with a dietary requirement, as any establishment that is happy to present wedges of stilton to someone who has informed them they are pregnant cannot be trusted with serious conditions such as a nut allergy.

We stayed in a suite, which had a beautiful bathroom, but the bedroom was in desperate need of refurbishment, appearing to be trapped in the early nineties with hideous fabrics and cheap furniture. The duvet was a very high tog and totally unsuitable for July; all the guests in our party commented on difficulty sleeping because of the heat.

The location is lovely and the spa first class, but on balance this hotel is overpriced with poor customer service and a complete lack of interest in meeting individual needs.
