having visited this hotel with my daughter a year or so ago, my partner chose it for him and I to visit for our birthdays, but this time with 'chien'. The room was one step removed from the one I had before, but larger, and having been told we could only have a shower as we had the dog? we had a large room with a bath. Given my dogless experience and this one, I say borrow a dog if you can! The dog had her own bed, posh biscuits and water bowl, with pooh bags thrown in of course. Previous to this my daughter and I had a smaller room and bed, and fire alarm in the night! This time breakfast was far superior, although dinner was lacking in freshness and style. Shot in the partridge, few vegetables and poor desert choice. Perhaps it was just me with the menu choice, but, if the staff could be less indifferent and be happy it would probably make the difference. The Spa is professional and delivers. My partner loved the gym and grounds. There is much to like here with the surroundings, but perhaps it needs to be celebrated within to give the best it has to offer.

As the hotel was fully booked, we were unable to stay more than one night. We were very impressed with the ambience of the hotel, the surroundings, views, staff, and food. The bedroom was beautifully furnished with lovely drapes and co-ordinating furnishings. The bed was larger than a super king size and very comfortable and the en suite had a bath and shower with wide screen. A good selection of toiletries were provided, although a shower cap would have been useful.
There were many lounges and some had a welcoming open fire, with lovely views of Bassenthwaite lake. We ate in the main dining room, with a five course dinner, which was excellent, well cooked and perfectly presented, with very attentive staff.

We would certainly recommend this hotel and would love to visit again. Our only regret is that we were unable to stay more than one night.

Have just returned from a 3 night stay and have nothing but praise for both the hotel amend the spa.

We stayed in what was classed as a club room which was in the main hotel building. The room as not enormous but very comfortable with modern bathroom complete with tv. We overlooked the car park but this not as bad as it sounds as beyond it were rolling fields complete with llamas and sheep. A very quiet room - didn't hear a sound all the time we were in it. We did pass other rooms on our way to the spa and although we did not see inside, our feeling was that we much preferred the character of the main hotel building.

We had dinner in the brasserie one night which was fine but the food and ambience in the formal lakeside dining room was superb. Proper old fashioned but not intrusive service. Maybe not particularly cheap but I would say good value for what it was. Yes you are expected to dress for dinner and not wear T-shirts or trainers but I wouldn't have dreamt of doing otherwise.

I was also pleasantly surprised by the price for drinks - again not cheap but certainly not outrageous considering the quality of the hotel.

We spent a few hours in the spa which never got too busy. Well maintained and comfortable. The outside hot tub a great way to relax.

So all in all what I'd call a luxury break.

Room Tip: We had room 164 which we thought was fine. Personally we were pleased to be in the main hotel. The...

Just got back from our 3rd visit but left with a bit of a sour taste. We always stay in a dog friendly room which are by the new extension and fab spa. Our first two visits we were allocated a 'compact' ground floor room which suited our needs and had a door to a patio area - ideal for the dog. This time we opened the room door to find a set of stairs with a smell I can only compare to a nursing home. Huge room upstairs with a seating area but in major need of refurbishment. Again huge bathroom which had been updated and included the tv. New extension bit still fab including the spa and bistro but unfortunately every time I walked into our room I ended up twisting my face. Also breakfast cereals were limited to say the least this time and no brands

Room Tip: Stay clear of 147

Our family had a lovely weekend at this best of both worlds hotel.
A super modern spa set in wonderful countryside but good old
fashioned silver service and wonderful food.
We arrived late from a tortuous journey up the M6 from Cheshire on a Friday night.
We were shown to our family room in the main house which was large and had
character , modern bathroom, separate bunk room for our boys our only complaint was it lacked a proper view and at £390 a night would of hoped for.
We opted on both nights for the lakeside restaurant, which served local produce to a high standard..Our boys of 9 and 11 managed to find choices which were served simply
which they enjoyed and it was a pleasure not to have them given a kids menu with all the usual choices. This made the trip that we were able to sit through a multiple course meal enjoying
great service and attention from the staff and the kids enjoying the occasion too.
Sorbet before the main was a revelation for the 9 year old.
We visited the spa on a number of occasions and found the treatments good and reasonably
priced, the outside hot tub was great particularly when served Champagne.
They do restrict the hours the children can use the pool, which we worked around, not sure really necessary as not lots of kids staying when we were there anyway.
While my wife was having a treatment I walked the kids over to the wildlife park ,this was across the front field and an interesting and good value excursion.
The general areas are great with high ceiling and log fires and panelling as you would expect from an old Hall,so for relaxing with a coffee or Brandy after your dinner just right. The afternoon teas looked great ,and very popular.I wished we had booked one.
Bassenthwaite being only a 10 minute drive from Keswick is a good location, if you want to go and do some shopping and there are a number of good pubs in locality for lunch.

Room Tip: main house, the courtyard rooms were on a busy corridor

We heard good things about this hotel so we were really looking forward to a relaxing stay. The spa is fab, the staff are friendly enough its just we were put in a room in the main house (127) which was very old fashioned and although this is expected due to the type of hotel, we would still say it needed updating (the bathroom was very dated) Looking on line at the other rooms in the hotel it seems we drew the short straw as there does seem to be nicer options. On top of this we were woken very early in the morning by workmen taping wires down and then using an industrial sander in one of the surrounding rooms! Considering we went here for relaxation we were very disappointed in the overall stay.

Room Tip: Dont stay in room 127!
