Overall we enjoyed our 2 night stay at Armathwaite Hall. The location is superb as is the Spa area. Our food was very good, however, there were a large number of what appeared trainee members of staff in the dining room which did result in one or two small issues but this did not detract from the food quality.

Our bedroom,126 which was in the main building was spacious and furnished in such a way that it was in keeping with the tradition of the hotel building, however, we did have a problem on the second day when a smell from the bathroom appeared and despite notifying reception of the problem no real solution was found, in fairness staff did come and spray the area but this was not a solution but a short term fix. We thought the smell was from the drains and even on making this point to reception again no attempt was made to rectify the cause, fortunately we were checking out the next morning otherwise we would have asked to move rooms.

We would probably not return to the hotel next time we visit the area as we feel there is better value to be had elsewhere.

Hi,

We stayed there last April 2014 with 3 kids.

Hotel decoration is slightly outdated in my view, although this is probably a choice to stay within the castle's type overall decoration scheme.

Bedding is nice with a huge bed for my wife and I, and 2 bunk beds for the kids in a separate tiny room (big enough to add a travel cot though). Kids room had TV which was really appreciated in the morning.

Staff was very helpful in accommodating our needs and ensure we would not disturb over guests there (3 boys can be noisy at times!). The garden is beautiful, and kids loved running around after breakfast. We felt safe enough to enjoy a last coffee whilst overlooking them from the conservatory.

The swimming pool is open to kids during certain hours. However, it is also a spa a gym club I guess for local residents. Hence lots of people would be swimming and you could quickly have this unpleasant feeling that you are disturbing them! But we never had any complaints, except from using the outside jacuzzi forbidden to kids (this is usual).

The diner is slightly overrated. We enjoy nice restaurants in London, and felt that the menu could definitely use a bit of simplicity. Products are great, but you get all the shenanigans one would have in slightly uptight provincial restaurants... Staff was really friendly.

A birthday treat for my 30th. What a fantastic place this is. A welcome drink as we checked in and fantastic chocolates complementary on the bed for my birthday.
Outstanding hotel with all the tradition remaining. Food was top class and the breakfast with a view was very nice.
The spa .. I have been to a few and this was by far the best.
Well worth the steep price as a treat.

Two day stay with friends. The hotel has a fantastic feel, the old blending well with the new Spa, which a great facility, Sat in the outdoor hot tub during a rainy downpour is certainly very pleasant.
The staff were fantastic, courteous, polite and efficient, and the quality of food and service in the Brasserie and Lake View Restaurant was great.
The room quality was excellent.
Together with our friends we really enjoyed the overall experience.
Would definitely go again.

Stayed overnight here with my daughter and her boyfriend..we had two lovely rooms above the main part of this stately hotel and my single room was warm, cosy and regal..furnishings throughout and drapery were tasteful, serene and suited the past history of this house..around every corner and courtyard I found interesting images..spa treatment was superb and the outdoor hot tub, looking out onto the superb landscape is a cherish able memory.pool, steam rooms and sauna etc are all pleasant experiences also..fine dining in the evening was relaxing, services excellent, food superb and we were served our coffee afterwards in the restful, central lounge..there is a lovely smell of past open log fires circulating the air and a distinct respect for the historical grandness of its location, style and significance.grounds are beautiful and stretch beyond the view from the outdoor sitting areas..all in all a memorable, welcoming experience

Room Tip: Lovely to stay in the main hotel

We stayed in Armathwaite Hall for two nights for a spa break in the Lake District.

The hotel itself is set in large grounds with plenty to explore including a wildlife park and very picturesque Batthenwaite Lake. The hotel have set walks which they advise with the routes and instructions printed.

The hotel is of a traditional English stately home in terms of interior decor with a lake view restaurant where breakfast, dinner and afternoon tea are served. There is also the modern and extended sector of the hotel as the spa and Brasserie restaurant. Good food on the whole but rather sparse portions for the meats of the served cooked breakfast. The spa is fantastic, good selection of facilities and lovely outdoor heated jacuzzi, highly recommend.

On arrival we were welcomed and shown around the hotel. Our room was very nice, spacious, living area, water bottles and tea making facilities and the bathroom had an in built TV which was a novelty,

An area for improvement would be the staff, although many were obliging and polite a few were very abrupt and rather rude at times, this tended to be the reception staff with the restaurant staff being very hospitable on the whole.

We booked this hotel as part of a living social deal as a night away for my husband and myself.
I can honestly say that some people who have wrote negative reviews must have been at a different hotel as I could not fault it.

We arrived to be greeted by friendly staff and offered a lovely glass of sherry. The room we had was lovely with all the amenities you would need for a stay, a lovely window seat which I sat on to admire the view. Traditionally decorated which gave it a warm comforted feeling. The bathroom had a tv in so I was able to enjoy a nice soak in the large bath whilst not missing out on the soaps haha.
We used the spa facilities and thought they were amazing. We enjoyed a lovely cool glass of wine spritzer in the outdoor hot tub and could quite easily have stayed there for the evening.
We enjoyed a cream tea which was well presented with silver service and the selection of different scones very enjoyable and delicious.
We ate in the brasserie and the food was beautiful and staff very friendly and pleasant. Wine was a little pricey, however I expected that it would be in such a nice hotel.
We decided to treat ourselves to room service for the breakfast and again we were not disappointed.
The grounds are well kept and the views beautiful. We left this hotel wanting to definitely come back.
