My partner and I were looking for somewhere to stay for a weekend treat to ourselves and came across the Armathwaite Hall website. Impressed with the building and facilities we phoned to book and were pleasantly surprised to be given a special offer rate on a family club room. We arrived with our 6 week old son a few hours earlier than checking-in time and where shown to the Lake Room to enjoy a drink whilst the room was prepared. Ten minutes later we were helped with our luggage to our room which had a double bed, single bed and cotbed (requested). The room was adequately sized with a flat screen TV and DVD player and we were suitably impressed with the flat screen TV in the bathroom!

We had booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis, the dinner being a 6 course meal. We had dinner in the restaurant on the first 2 evenings and took advantage of the baby monitoring service which enabled us to keep our son in his bedtime routine. The menu was extensive and the food excellent ,as was the service. The courses were just the right size so as by the time the coffee came you felt comfortably contented rather than full and bloated. On the last evening we had dinner in our room and due to being DBB board we were able to choose 3 of the 6 evening meal menu courses, each of which was delivered individually to our room ensuring each course was hot. We decided to take breakfast in the room each morning and tried both the cumbrian and continental breakfasts which where equally enjoyable. We also took lunch in the Lake Room and found the food and service as excellent as in the restaurant.

We booked a couple of treatments each in the newly renovaoted Spa which is a fantastic facility and instantly felt relaxed and spoilt in the AH Spa robes. Following each wonderful treatment you are led to the "quiet room" which contains a number of beds complete with duvets and faux fur blankets overlooking the grounds and lake where you are hard pressed not to enjoy a little doze!

We were shown around the conferencing and wedding facilities and were impressed with what could be offered and catered for. There were some final renovations being done which did not affect our stay whatsoever and which, when finished, will only add to the already impressive building and grounds.

The staff could not be more accommodating and friendly and helped make the weekend exceed our expectations. I would not hesitate in recommending Armathwaite Hall to others (I already have in fact!) and will certainly be returning again, hopefully soon.

What a wonderful place to stay. This is the most luxurious, out of this world hotel that I have ever stayed in. It's got real old world charm and courtesy. The spa is amazing and totally modern but fits very well with the country house feel of the hotel as it is so stylish.

The food was the best I've tasted, and as you get a 6 course dinner, the experience lasts all night.

It isn't cheap, but the value is well worth it for what you get.

If I had to nit pick, I'd say the swimming pool water is a little on the cold side and the breakfast would be so much better if it was freshly cooked and waiter service, rather than a buffet but they are hardly deal breaking items.

If you are looking for a romantic, out of the way place where you don't need anything but to relax and indulge then this is the place. Perfect !

this place is like staying in a stately home in England. The service was fantastic as was the food. The location is great and there is a spa and even access to a small zoo!.
I could recommend it to anyone wanting a taste of living like the nobility. We had a room with a four poster bed, but there is a room there with its own private access to a roof patio and the views are magnificent. The manager, - Steven, could'nt do enough for us and the rest of the staff were the same.

Armathwaite is just what you need after a long week at work. Our group has stayed here numerous times before and we feel like we are at home. The attentive staff, new luxury spa and outdoor activities mean that you do not need to leave the Armathwaite estate - there is certainly plenty to do. We started our weekend with some pampering in the spa - highly recommendable, whilst the more adventurous in the group went off to go quad biking. Pre-dinner drinks with some whisky tasting (as it was Burns weekend) and then into dinner which never fails to delight. The award winning chef turns out some fabulous dishes - he did the haggis proud for us! A memorable experience thankyou

For christmas I received a nights B+B and sunset spa experience at the gorgeous Armathwaite Hall. My husband and myself have stayed here before to celebrate birthday's and our wedding anniversary, we love it there.
We started with lunch in the Lakeroom a view right down the Bassenthwaite valley, beautiful food, sumptuous surroundings and looked after by Cosmin a very attentive young man.
The Spa was magnificent from the offing, the changerooms, reception area and the quality of the furnishings to the bathrobes all wonderfully thought out and luxurious.
The pool was all ours with its 4 fountains and views out over the landscaped garden down to the lake. I never thought I would be in a hot tub in a garden in January but hey someone has to do it, I still can't believe it! The hydrotherapy pool was a joy and the sauna and steam room were very good too, I loved the star lights and the tropical shower that gave the scent of lemons and limes. Once the strenuous work was over it was time for the hush room a beautifully lit room (yes it had a marvellous view too as did the sauna) with snuggle duvets and fur blankets. The facial was no disappointment either the quiet area is beautiful and the treatment was sooooooo relaxing. I haven't mentioned the the state of the art gymn as I was more into the pool, I left the weights to the husband. We loved and appreciated every second we were there and we can't wait to go back. We've already arranged for our son and his fiance to go for their birthday's, we are certain Armathwaite Hall will have a special place in their hearts too. Once again Armathwaite Hall has come up trumps.

Facilities

The new spa is amazing. A 16m indoor heated pool with outdoors heated hot tub overlooking the gardens. A separate water therapy room contained aroma room, steam room, sauna, and a fantastic hydro pool. All this is all free to hotel guests and is certainly the biggest asset for the hotel in my book.

The public rooms are very grand with well maintained furniture and loads of roaring fires to keep you snug.

Trotters world is 2 minutes walk from the hotel is a surprisingly large array of animals some of which I’d never seen before inc monkeys and wild cats. The entry to this is free for hotel residence and is well worth it

Food and Drink

There is a bar serving the usual over priced cocktails (£8+ each for a tiny glass). Wine was reasonably priced with a good selected. We had lunch but this was very overpriced at £15 for 2 sandwiches and a handful of crisps, so be careful.
Evening meal is served in a restaurant. The 6 course evening meal was very well presented and a good choice although very ostentatious and unnecessary, but if you like that sort of thing then you’ll enjoy it. 3 courses would have done me.

Rooms

We opted for a refurbished classic room in the spa wing after reading previous reviews. The room was plenty big enough a lovely comfy bed and flatscreen TVs in the room and bathroom. Unfortunately during the night a horrendous smell came from our bathroom causing us having to sleep with the windows open in the middle of winter. We companied at reception in the morning. They checked our room and insulted us by saying they couldn’t smell anything, even though we still couldn’t go into our bathroom without feeling physically sick. Needless to say we were offered a discount off the room, which is an unofficial admission of the fault. I suspect there is a known problem with the drains around the rooms nearest to the new spa as the smell is noticeable in the corridors too. If we were there longer we would just have moved rooms.

Overall we were very happy and despite the problems with the room and we will return to the hotel again purely for the spa facilities. We would choose not eat in the hotel as you can get much better food elsewhere for significantly cheaper. We paid £105 pppn dbb booking directly with the hotel.

On reflection, one of the best decisions and choices we made for our Wedding Day was to choose Armathwaite Hall as the venue.

From the outset, Steven Langley was exemplary in the co-ordination of our day, his direction and assistance in the choice of menu for our wedding breakfast to the wine preference and order of ceremony was invaluable. His genuine friendliness was evident from our first meeting and he has the proficiency to make every prospective bride and groom feel as though they are the most important people that he has ever met. He truly is an absolute credit to Armathwaite Hall.

When we arrived on October 30th full of nervous excitement, the team of very experienced staff knew exactly how to put us at ease and reassure us completely. The front of house reception staff were wonderfully helpful and professional as were each and every representative of the establishment. We even had the weather forecast relayed to us on a regular basis in readiness for our big day! Outstanding.

Sally Horsepool was also absolutely exceptional in her execution in organizing the finer details during the morning of our wedding day. Nothing was ever too much trouble, her attention to detail was excellent and her manner and genuine warmth with our family and guests was remarkable. I really did not expect everything to be so truly perfect but it really was and I accredit that to all of the Armathwaite staff involved in managing our day. Danni was also splendid in dressing both the ceremony and wedding breakfast rooms and ensuring that everything looked perfect.

The Lakeview Room looked superb as the warm Winter sun flooded into this spacious and extremely comfortable room where we exchanged our wedding vows. The wedding breakfast was absolutely delicious, Antonio’s attention was superb & again an outstanding service was demonstrated by all of the Lakeview Restaurant staff. It is so difficult to ensure that you are electing the best possible people to take care of your every need for your wedding day because you want it to be flawless in every way. We now know that the standard of the services at Armathwaite are second to none.

Our photographer commented on both the breathtaking beauty of the venue and also the staff saying how they were quite possibly the most practiced, skilled and proficient team he had ever dealt with in all his years of wedding photography. Some of the images of Armathwaite that he has taken are spectacular.

As with all stately homes there are areas of 'tiredness' but this is being addressed by the opening of the new Spa and the continued refurbishment of bedrooms. To us this was a minor detail on such an important day ... everything else was just beyond compare and I would highly recommend Armathwaite Hall without reservation.
