“fabulous short break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2010

We booked a one night stay here and it was fabuluous - totally relaxing.
The spa area is great and although quite a few people were in there none of the sauna/steam rooms etc seemed full. Used the spa again on Sun morning and it was deserted.
The 6 course meal was beautiful, I'm quite picky and I still managed to be full.
Drinks in front of one of the many open fires has to be a highlight, the service was exceptional and I can't wait to go back- babysitters permitting, as it's not really a place for children.
We had a refurbished room with its own little courtyard, no complaints at all.
All in all it was spectacular but we don't do this sort of thing that often.

found this on the web, and although at the top end of our budget decided to treat ourselves. Have been spoilt for anywhere else now. the main hotel is everything you want from an old fashioned country hotel, comfy beds, friendly courteous staff, and wonderful food. as good as any city hotel. Moving over to the spa leads you into a totally different modern environment - with all the latest equipment and luxury, treated myself to a facial and it was luxurious and of a very very high standard. Being led away at the end to lie in a hush room wrapped in warm cosy blankets was the height of spoilt! as was sitting out in the hot tub looking at those gorgeous mountains.

It is expensive but you certainly get your money's worth. Id go back at the drop of a hat.. wonderful jf.

I discovered this hotel a couple of years ago, & as I stay in Cumbria twice a year I now often call in for lunch or dinner . It's a wonderful place & I just wish I'd found it long ago. Each visit is easy to sum up. The friendly service is excellent, the food is wonderful, & the comfortable baronial ambiance is so restful. I have never found anything to fault & recommend Armathwaite Hall without hesitation. Just go & enjoy it !!

having said the setting is wonderful, and the exterior looks lovely, the same cannot be said for the staff, interior decor and fittings and the food.
the spa was lovely, but the pathways were very poorly maintained, (you cannot wear your
jimmy choos on gravel, !!)
the dining room experience would rival an episode of fawlty towers, except we did not laugh!! the mantra was dress for dinner, but quite frankly the guests were seated looking very scruffy, not at all what i would have expected before arrival.
the hotel seems to be staffed by people who don't really care you are there, nor that interested in providing anything more exciting than basic fare.
to advertise a 6 course meal would be lovely, but only 2 courses were worth attempting.
who ever eats sorbet these days?! the menu was very dated, and room service was no better. our tray was in the corridor for 3 days.
at no time at breakfast were we made to feel welcome, no "good morning" we felt we were staying at some sort of institution.
yes it is faded, tatty in areas, and a bit dusty, but that could have been forgiven if not for the dismal way the place is run.
certainly my lasting image will be a pot of tea, with some one elses tea bag, being a different flavour hanging onto the handle!! such class!!!

This is a review that I wrote about Armathwaite Hall for a national newspaper.

Set in 400 acres of park and woodland, with breathtaking views of Bassenthwaite lake and mountains, Armathwaite Country House Hotel and Spa is an idyllic retreat. A beautiful 11th century manor with cosy log fires and lake view restaurants, coupled with a brand new state of the art spa. An exceptional experience in luxury and relaxation, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

The Spa, which opened in January of this year, has a contemporary feel, with a real fire and glass chimney centerpiece. Featuring a 16m infinity pool with waterfall, a hydrotherapy suite, thermal suite with aroma room and a huge bubbling outdoor hot tub overlooking the woodland... Truly stunning..

After a delicious lunch in the Spa Brasserie we went on to have our treatments. My boyfriend and I both opted for the Prescription Aromatherapy Full Body Massage. It's a combination of shiatsu massage, which works on pressure points to relieve tension, and relaxing aromatherapy.. pure bliss. Afterwards, my therapist wrote me a "prescription" of the essential oils that she'd used and told me of any areas of stress or tension that needed particular attention. She put a few drops of the oils on to my robe and took me to the amazing relaxation room. My boyfriend, now a Spa convert, was waiting there. We lay in our day beds with crisp white sheets, looking out on to the woods, and drifted off in to a little afternoon snooze...

What an impressive and immaculate hotel; hidden away off the beaten track in its own grounds at the head of Bassenthwaite Lake.

We spent 4 lovely stress relieving days/nights in its wonderfully relaxing ambiance.

All of the staff were very welcoming, professional, attentive and pleasant.

The room was just stunning with a huge and extremely comfortable bed, large double bath and separate shower. A turn down service was provided and there was never a fuss to replace or request further condiments.

The food is of the highest quality – superbly presented and worth the prices. Afternoon tea is highly recommended.

The spa is most excellent and all of its amenities must be experienced to be appreciated. We easily spent 3 to 4 hours flitting between the various pools, steam/aroma room, sauna and jacuzzis. The outside heated spa is the highlight overlooking the grounds and pine trees - especially at dusk/night time and in the rain – it would be great in the snow!

The spa and treatment areas were very impressive and would de-stress the most stressful of people.

The gym had excellent modern equipment which had commanding views of the grounds.

We have already pre-booked for next year. The only complaint is that Armathwaite Hall is not nearer to us!
