Having stayed at the Pheasant many times we decided that at this visit we would eat in the bistro rather than the diningroom.
This was a good choice - very suitable meals for those of you who have enjoyed a day out and about in the lakes.
There is an excellent choice of dishes on the menu and the bistro is much more informal than the diningroom.
The helpings are generous but there are somethings that you can share or choose as a starter or main size.
Over three days we sampled - hake, queen scallops, pea and mint soup, liver and onions and raviolli to mention just a few. Sometimes we had no room for puds!
Not fine dining but very satisfying.

Room Tip: Garden rooms ideal for dog owners

We should have eaten in the Bistro! The food as always was fabulous but, the service very poor in the bar area even though some of us had to go looking for staff, we all had to wait a long time for the food. Obviously the diners in the Bistro were the priority.

This was our second visit to the Pheasant and again it did not disappoint us. It is a lovely old pub situated in a beautiful part of the lake district. We met up with friends and enjoyed a pre-lunch drink sat very comfortably in front of a blazing wood fire in an attractively furnished reception room. Lunch in the Bistro was good - traditional pub grub, well cooked and well presented by the friendly efficient staff. The fresh fish was really good and the puds were excellent too. Overall a very pleasant experience and not too expensive either!

We have stayed here before so we know how lovely the place is. We booked in February for late September this year as we wanted two double rooms and a single for four nights. A family get together.
My daughter checked the day before to try and book an extra nights stay only to be told they had no record of our booking. You can imagine the shock and panic as we were already staying elsewhere in The Lakes ready to move on to The Pheasant. A good job we had the letter of the booking with us. We asked them to sort it out. Eventually they came back to us offering one double room in hotel, one double room in a cottage and BB for my son 10mins walk away. Yes they did say we could have free accommodation for all the upset, but it really did spoil our holiday and we were not together in the hotel as it should have been. They said this had never happened before. I hope it doesn't happen again.
This is a lovely place to stay, the food is excellent in both restaurant and Bistro and a wonderful bar or lounge for pre dinner drinks. Really very comfortable with superb garden and walks in the area. You even have use of spar/sauna at another hotel. You may even see a red squirrel. Just remember to double check your booking, I know I will.

My husband and I have staid here on several trips to the northern Lake District. This hotel is not only beautifully maintain in the tradition of a country inn but the service is impeccable. Places like this are getting harder and harder to find in Britain. There is not only an authentic English pub with a real fire and dark cubbies but a less formal dinning room and a lovely formal one that has been recently refurbished. The food in all three is delicious and good value. A mid-day dinner is served on Sundays. The last time I was here I had leg of lamb in the dinning room that was as good as it gets. The rooms are furnished with antiques and are spacious and upscale. The bathrooms are large and modern. There is a nice garden behind the hotel under the fell to sit in on sunny afternoons. The lounge is a masterpiece. A member of "The Great Inns of Britain", the Pheasant lives up to the name and will not disappoint you. I have rated the location as excellent BECAUSE it is somewhat out of the way and not right on the tourist path - lots of lovely walks and quaint villages in the area.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the inn are my favorites because they look out on the garden and the fell.

We stayed there 2 nights and truly enjoyed the visit.
Staff were very helpful & friendly - our bedroom was large & very comfortable (very big, comfy bed, Molton Brown in the bathroom & lots & lots of hot water!!!). Tea & coffee making facilities in the room too, with nice touches such as home-made shortbread biscuits & a mini-Thermos of fresh cold milk each day.

Breakfast was amazing - all made to order with Kedgeree & Smoked Salmon scrambled eggs and even Eggs Benedict on the menu, as well as Full English of course (with Black pudding, grilled apple, and lamb's livers if you wanted them!!)

We had dinner in the bistro on the Saturday evening (arrived late on the Friday night) and were very impressed with the standard of food. Beautiful Queen scallops & Crab linguini starters followed by scrumptious fishcakes & Braised beef as main courses.
Service was attentive, efficient and courteous, with the same staff who had served us at breakfast, so it was nice to see the same faces again.

We borrowed an OS map from reception for our walk up Skiddaw - had a fabulous day out. It was so nice to come back and enjoy a pint of Jennings by the log fire in the front lounge.

Highly recommend the Pheasant to anyone passing by - even if only for Sunday lunch!!

Room Tip: We were in Matterdale which is large and has twin beds pushed together to make a huuuuge king size b...

This hotel was recommended to us and we certainly would not have found it on our own as it is off the main road. It certainly was a pleasant experience. A very old world hotel full of old world charm, decor, service, and manners. Beautiful gardens in the grounds in different small sections to explore. Excellent food and we did not even extend ourselves to the fine dining restaurant. Modernised rooms and bathrooms with all the modern conveniences. Very enjoyable in a beautiful part of England. The only negative is having to carry heavy suitcases up the staircase as there is no lift.
