Last week end was just one of many breaks we've had at The Pheasant. Once again the staff and service were excellent. Also the sign of a well run business is " when the boss is away and the service is still excellent" suggest everything is in order!", the Director/Manager was having a break also.
The food both nights in the Bistro was fabulous and again a good selection of wines.
We also like the friendly bar, frequented by several locals.
Cannot wait for our next trip to the Pheasant around Christmas time.

Room Tip: We have stayed in most of the rooms but we prefer the ones at the front.

we just got back from a three-night stay at the Pheasant, and loved it. We have stayed there before & have never been disappointed; it is welcoming, comfortable, cosy & tasteful and the food is excellent. The bedrooms are charming & comfortable (though some could do with freshening up a bit as the wallpaper is peeling in some parts) & the bathrooms are spacious & clean. There are two residents' lounges, both filled with comfy chairs & sofas & with log fires, making it so pleasant to just sit with a drink & chat or read a book. If the weather is vile one can just settle down in front of the fire & read -heaven. The gardens are delightful, with meandering paths, a number of seating areas & lovely planting. Very quiet & peaceful! A little pricey, but worth it if you want to feel pampered.

Room Tip: the rooms are either 'standard' 'classic' or 'superior'; go for classic or s...

Tried a number of times to get in. Always booked. Surely a good sign

Was more organised this time
The staff were great knew the menu and could help with my wife's dietary requirements.
Costs a little more than most but worth the extra

It's worth the drive out of Keswick.

The Pheasant Inn nestles in the loop of a country lane near the head of Bassenthwaite Lake, near Cockermouth. Its low, solid exterior is typical of older houses, farms and hotels in the Lake District. Its interior is far from typical; it is warm and welcoming with two lounges - the smaller one used mostly by residents - both of which boast roaring fires in winter. The Garden Lounge is the larger of the two and has beautiful views over the pretty garden and the wooded fells beyond; a perfect place to indulge yourself and your favourite people in one of The Pheasant's famously gargantuan afternoon teas or simply a cup of cappuccino and a piece of home-made shortbread.

There are two restaurants for residents and non-residents to choose from: The Bistro buzzes with life and has a friendly, relaxed atmosphere that can be enjoyed by the whole family. The Garden Restaurant overlooks the garden and here the atmosphere is also very friendly but much quieter and children are not allowed here (bliss for my wife, Judi and me as ex-teachers!). The food in both is of the same VERY high quality!

The Pheasant Inn bar is famous throughout Cumbria (and beyond). Frequented by the famous John Peel in his day, it has mellow, aged cream walls and cosy corners to huddle in. The stock of single malts is enormous and some very fine wines are available along with decent stuff that even I can afford. There is also a selection of locally-brewed draught beers to please the ale fancier.

We have stayed in two of the upstairs rooms. The furniture is a very long way from standardised hotel offerings. Each room is individually furnished with antiques and in excellent taste, walls are decorated in warm, light colours and all rooms are en-suite. have phone, TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, iron/ironing board and hair drier. We have also stayed in both the garden annexe rooms where well-behaved dogs are allowed and Bertie, our miniature schnauzer loves the place and the freedom he is given of the lounge and bar areas - though he always wears formal dress (his lead!).

Suffice it to say, if we didn't think this place was a real gem we wouldn't return year after year in summer and for the amazing New Year Party in the festive season.

You would be well advised to give The Pheasant a try - you'll be back!

Room Tip: There is no wifi in the garden annexe but it is available throughout the public areas of the hotel a...

Found the Pheasant Inn along a somewhat bumpy side-road just off Bassenthwaite Lake.
Last Tuesday we'd arranged to meet friends for lunch in the Bistro, but were invited to get together before the meal either in the Bar or the little front lounge. We chose the lounge since it had comfy chairs...

A friendly waitress helped us through the menu (which was a little confusing) and we were soon enjoying a better-than-average pub lunch. My mackerel starter was ok, but the pork I had for main was excellent. My wife skipped the starter and had beetroot-infused gravadlax which she enjoyed. Out friends prefer vegetarian meals and found good choices in soup, soufle and baguettes.

We ended up back in the lounge for coffee.

A lovely time catching up with our friends, but I wonder why there are not more choices of hostelry in the Lakes with a lake view!

Room Tip: We were not overnight guests

The service at the pub was very friendly and professional. The food was freshly prepared (be prepared for a bit of a wait during busy periods), portions were filling (great after a long day walking) and very tasty. Overall the cost of a meal was not out of line with anywhere else in Keswick, but the menu was a bit more exciting than traditional pub food....that said, I went for the steak and ale pie, which I can heartily recommend!

I would therefore not hesitate to recommend this pub to any visitor to Keswick.

It is worth noting that the Pheasant is an inn with rooms, a bar, a lounge, a bistro and a restaurant and I only visited the restaurant. We sat and enjoyed a pre-lunch drink in great comfort while looking at the papers. We were taken throught to the restaurant where we ordered sunday lunch. Starters were the chicken & duck terrine and the scotch egg. The scotch egg itself was perfect although the soldiers and sauce didn't add much to the dish. We then had one beef roast and one pork roast which were so good that I have upped my score from average to very good. The pork was perfecltly cooked with a mouthwatering array of vegetables, crispy crackling and delicious gravy. It was sunday roast as it should be (but sadly isnt in many pubs). There were just a few niggles which I should mention. The restaurant seemed quiet and rather formal, probably perfect to take granny for lunch but not much atmosphere (maybe the bistro is more lively?) also the decor was neither traditional pub nor trendy minimalist but somewhere in the middle which didn't do much for me. While the staff were quite friendly service was a bit slow (bearing in mind it wasn't packed) and I think I overheard a waiter complaining about another table through the kitchen door! Oops. Lastly the cutlery was silver plate that has been washed a lot and is not deteriorating. Surely it would be easy to replace - good quality plate can be sourced at auction for next to nowt. In summary this was a really good meal and with a few tweaks the place could be excellent. Next time I might give the bistro a go!
