Best Western Plus Lake District, Keswick, Castle Inn Hotel
Ranked #5 of 5 Hotels in Bassenthwaite
Reviewed 26 July 2011

This is a very nice hotel which is undergoing further renovation and improvement. The hotel is situated in a prime location of natural beauty ie lakes and mountain peaks close by (Skiddaw) and is very peaceful yet only 5/6 miles from the towns of Keswick and Cockermouth.

Our stay was a very pleasant having been upgraded to one of the 'superior' rooms. The room itself was both spacious and comfortable and to a very high standard. The ambience in the hotel was good and general service excellent. We used the leisure facilities on a number of occasions and found them more than adequate.

The only minor point to highlight (and it was minor) was that the restraunt could have done wih a slightly more 'up market' menu, making it more of a dining experience.

Overall a very posiive experience !

We stayed here on a mid week break to the lake district. Nice clean hotel and the staff were very friendly. It was very quiet during our stay though and lacked atmosphere.Breakfast was fab and staff very attentive and friendly during it.Room was very clean and comfortable.

My main gripes were the price for a glass of wine...£6 is just taking the mickey?!!..i would suggest to get more folk in during a recession that the drinks and food prices be reviewed.Other issue was the lack of busses into Keswick, sure there is a rather sporadic bus service but after being out all day walking we discovered that the next bus to Keswick was at 7pm with the last one back to the hotel being 21:22..so hardly worthwhile, which meant we had to use the car to travel into Keswick to eat.Would have eaten at the hotel and enjoyed a drink more but felt it was too expensive.

This hotel is lovely but its location just a wee bit too remote in my opinion.

Thank you for the excellent feedback you gave us regarding the cleanliness of the room and the attitude of our staff, I believe this is the basic of the hospitality business and I am please we are excelling on those categories.
Regarding the buses from Keswick; we are working closely with the local community requesting adequate timetable from the bus company. Also, we have a selection of local Taxi Company who can provide services at very reasonable price.
Finally, I am sorry you feel the price of the beverage was too high and take the comment on board.
Thank you again for your review.

Nice hotel but not a great location in terms of views. Staff were friendly and helpful and we got an upgrade to a suite which was lovely.best was so uncomfortable we had backache all the next day. View from the room was a disappointment and it was a long walk to the main part of the hotel. Food in the restaurant was very good, we were very impressed with the freshness and quality. Overall would recommend for everything but the location and the bed.

Dear reviewer,
Thank you for taking the time to express how you felt about your stay at the Castle Inn. I have passed on you great comments about the food to chef and his team.
I am glad to hear you like your room and sorry if you felt it was slightly away from the reception. We are completing the last touch on our new reception area that will be opening in September and will bring a more central point in the hotel.
On the matter of your bed, even being a very personal preference, I have instructed my head housekeeper to carry a review of our Sealy mattress in your Suite. I hope we will have the chance to welcome you again soon. Kinds Regards.

Lovely hotel, with great food, a little remote if you wanting to be in the town (book a town hotel), this one is 7 mile from Kewick but does have a bus stop outside if you want to get out without the car. Plenty of country roads and walks if thats what you like!

My husband knows this hotel well so he had booked a large suite room with four poster bed, separate sitting area with sofa's, two tv's and a lovely bathroom, roll top bath and separate large shower. The room was clean and of good standard, no complimentary robes and soap rather than hand wash, and I do feel this is such a waste as we opened the soap used it for the two day stay but then it will have been thrown, hand wash more efficient (attached to the wall). Same goes for the shower gel/shampoo, rather than the little complimentary ones, I would go for ones attached to the wall in the shower unit and in the middle above the bath.

A little thing that let the hotel down was that the room was cold, even though it was July, the weather was a bit wet and so I found the room and the hotel in parts cold.

There is a pool and gym, I used the gym which was not to busy at any of the times, but if you like to run and have someone to run outside with there is plenty of hills to test your legs. The gym is open to non residents and therefore on the morning there was a lot of older people in the pool and the gym.

On the evening we walked a four mile route up some nice climbs and headed to the Sun Inn, Bassenthwaite, the pub can be reached by a shorter route of a mile there and back but we when for a longer walk to work up a appetite, this pub is worth a visit.

Food in the hotel was good, I had soup every day in the bar and the warm chicken salad which was lovely and a good size even though I only ordered the smaller size!

Nice hotel, which is peaceful, someone has put a comment previously about the noisy junction, but I have to say we only noticed this because of the review, some of the drivers do go a little fast on the country lanes so be warned if walking out or driving out!!!!

Firstly. Before booking we done the usual and looked straight at the bad reviews. Didnt see anything too off putting and made our booking. When we arrived we too had to park on the other side of the road. I must say that the extra 20 foot walk just ruined it for me! ( please note the sarcasm) i found the staff VERY helpfull and very accomodating. The food in the bar was fantastic. We had the lamb shank and it was to die for!! Our room was very large with a nice bed and furnished lovely. The swimming pool was brilliant, heated just right, Overall we would definately come back and stay for longer next time.

very helpful and friendly staff did everything they could to make our stay as enjoyable as possible. would recommend you ask for a view when booking if you want one. bathrooms fitted to excellent standard in all the rooms we saw (4 rooms) also the furnishings in the rooms. evening meal excellent. very comfortable seating area in conservatory overlooking the garden. well planned refurbishment work being done but very discreetly. i would like to thank the staff once more for their attention and helpfulness.

Room Tip: ground level rooms - no view but super quiet
