“Something Missing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2013

Visited again in May this year, but there seems to be something missing from the original quality. The food was fantastic but do you want to eat the same thing night after night? I think not! Whilst the quality of food was excellent on one night, the same meal on our third night was just not up to the level of our first night. The rooms do not stand the test of time, especially since they are meant to have been renovated only last year. The level of cleaning could have been better ie: attention to detail not what it should be, we had to ask for our wastebin to be emptied (from the previous occupant.) not very nice! The only person that deserves a mention is Katrin, she goes out of her way to make you feel valued. She is now the Matre' D but has an interest in what her clients are feeling about the rest of the hotel services. The big draw to this hotel has to be its position with views of the Lake and mountains. Anyone looking for a good spot to explore from it has to be one of the first options. However, I think we will look elsewhere when we next take a break in the Lakes.

Room Tip: Suites are the best rooms, but ask for the suite with a corner spot of the garden and lake views

Dear Guest

Thank you for your recent feedback. I have since taken on board your comments regarding our Ritsons Restaurant A La Carte menu and spoken to chef and we have increased the selection from 8 choices of starters, mains and desserts to also include chefs daily special.

I have also passed on your kind words regarding Katalin our Maitre'D. We do hope that you will visit us again in the near future.

Best wishes

Stayed there at the Start of June I think !!

First of all, it was a long way round from the front of the building to find reception, but after following the signs I finally found it !!

Check in went smoothly and I went to find my room (Room 69 I think), had a large, clean bathroom, huge bed, sofa area, views onto the gardens and patio doors to open up into the garden, although over looked and shared with other guests. Room also had a fridge.

Room was very hot has I entered, has it was a hot day outside!

The hotel itself had views of the lake, and its only a walking distance from the hotel.

Didn't try any of the facilities out, nor did I eat in the restaurant! Hotel does serve continental breakfast in your room, which I would of liked to see a cooked breakfast on the menu, has a extra treat!

Will deffo be back !!!

Room Tip: Room 69 - Fridge, large bed, seating area

My hubby and l stayed here 14th July-16th July booked a double room. Lovely location, very close to the Osprey viewpoint at Dodd Wood-which we were ver lucky to see the whole osprey family. Also great for venturing into Keswick.

I emailed the hotel prior to our visit and requested a room with a view -on arrival l got told they didnt have any although the hotel was extremely quiet.

The room was fine, very clean and bathroom large, l never whinge about hotel beds but the bed was teeny and extremely uncomfortable but we managed for 2 nights....the fan was very helpful as the small room was like a sweat box with the wonderful weather we are having.

Hotel is like a maize, corridors and lots of rooms and is set in lovely grounds-we even seen a rabbit.
On our first night we sat in the beer garden before moving into the bar-food was delicious and staff very friendly.

Breakfast next morn was lovely-lots to choose from continental and full cumbrian again staff lovely.

We used the pool, sauna and steam room which was lovely-towels provided-great. Would like to see the jacuzzi working as think its a miss.

Nice quiet relaxing stay, would recommend.

Our expectations were rather higher than the actuality when we stopped at the Best Western Castle Inn for lunch recently.
It does have to be said that their Monday to Thursday meal deal for Senior Citizens is good value.
However, having noted that it was now a Best Western (we are aware this is a marketing organisation) and comparing to a local Best Western, we thought it would be considerably better than it was last time we visited. Perhaps I in particular am being pedantic, but I was surprised at the state of the furnishings in the Bar Dining Room - looking round at the leather chairs, the majority of them were showing severe signs of distress!!
It does have to be said that our meal deal was ok, average pub grub and we might well return if wanting a reasonably-priced quick meal.

Stayed one night here whilst visiting Woolfest in Cockermouth. The hotel is well presented and clean although a little bit of a rabbit warren as regards finding the newly located reception. The staff were very helpful both on reception and in the restaurant. Food was served well with a good selection and within a reasonable time frame. The bedroom was well presented with a lovely view of Bassenthwaite, which would have been even better had the mist and the rain cleared!! But thats the Lake District for you. However id did not dampen our stay, would recommend this hotel for anyone visiting Woolfest.

An excellent hotel situated in the quieter part of the lake district though in an ideal location for climbing the nearby Skiddaw and surrounding fells. We were unexpectedly upgraded on arrival to room 34 which was a magnificent suite overlooking the putting green and tennis court. The restaurant offered a superb menu and the staff and service were excellent. The same could also be said of the service and food in the hotel bar, and the staff made a great effort to welcome you and ensure everything was ok. I would recommend visiting this hotel, especially if you want a relaxing weekend away.

Room Tip: Room 34 if you can grab it.

As described on the tin - for the cost its fine. Use of the swimming pool, comfortable rooms, free WiFi. Restaurant not fine dining, but quite adequate. When we went breakfast was slow, but we were in at 9.15 and got the last table. So perhaps our fault and the restaurant was full. Would always return for our annual trip to see the ospreys at Bassenthwaite. We used to stay at The Pheasant a few miles away, but since they put the prices up The Castle Inn has been a more that acceptable alternative - in particular with free use of the pool. When they have had bus parties there, they have arranged for those guests to dine in another area and so that has not affected the service to guests travelling independently.
