Best Western Plus Lake District, Keswick, Castle Inn Hotel
Ranked #5 of 5 Hotels in Bassenthwaite
Reviewed 13 November 2013

We had booked this hotel using our Tesco Clubcard vouchers specifically because they allow dogs. The hotel is quite isolated 7 miles North of Keswick, although this wasn't a problem for us.
We were given a lovely room which had recently been refurbished with direct access to outside for our dog. We had a meal in the bar on the first night which was lovely and breakfast on both days was extensive, well cooked and served by very friendly staff. Overall, apart from some really dreadful weather, a thoroughly enjoyable stay and we would definitely return.

Room Tip: The refurbished rooms were the old Beauty Salon rooms that had outside access and wooden floors idea...

Dear Guest

We appreciate you taking the time to review the Castle Inn Hotel and it is pleasing to read your excellent comments about our hotel.

We always welcome dogs and have two rooms allocated for this, a well appointed Standard Double and an Executive Bedroom. Both of the rooms have direct access to outside were there is 9 acres of our own land where dogs (and humans) can run around in. Adjacent to the hotel is Messengermire Wood which has lovely walks and trails that stretch for miles.

Thank you once again for your feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel in the near future.

Kind regards

We've just returned from a lovely two day trip to the castle inn,but strongly feel that the food on the 2nd day of the trip let this hotel down badly. Our first night we ate in the lakers bar and we couldn't fault it it was very nice.Breakfast on both mornings was fine too,but on 2nd day we had our lunch and also our dinner in the lakers bar and they were both really poor not what you would expect from a 4 star hotel. We also had to upgrade our room as the executive suite we booked was very small and with a 2 year old it was a bit cramped.

We booked a family room and a standard double room. On arrival, the girl on reception was very attentive and pleasant. My son was staying in the double room and he was offered an upgrade to an executive room at a discounted price which he accepted. The family room was very large and comfortable with views out across the mountains and lake. The bed was very comfortable. There was ample tea and coffee plus biscuits. Breakfast was excellent with a great choice and all the staff were very pleasant and polite. We ate in the restaurant on the second night and the food was very good. The only issues we had with the hotel were firstly the wifi was very poor throughout most of the hotel with only a good signal near reception. On the Sunday morning, my son woke to find no heating or hot water. This was on probably the coldest morning at this time of year and the room was freezing. He contacted reception who stated there was a problem on that side of the building. They hoped to rectify it soon and he was offered a late checkout so he could wash after breakfast! This was not possible and they offered not to charge the additional amount for the upgraded room. I appreciate the problem was probably beyond their control but we paid for a service which was not provided. This was a disappointing end to what had been a very enjoyable weekend and would have been rated excellent if not for the problems.

Room Tip: If requiring a family room (double and single bed) go for room 21

Dear Guest

Thank you for your recent feedback regarding the Castle Inn Hotel. it was pleasing to read your excellent comments about the accommodation and food.

I have checked WiFi and it is now working at full strength, my apologies if this wasn't the case during your stay. We are also sorry about the boiler, unfortunately it broke down in this area where you were in the early hours of Sunday morning. I understand my Duty Manager provided all rooms with portable heaters to try and remedy the situation and offered other bedrooms and the leisure as alternatives for showering. Luckily our very efficient Plumber came out later that day and fixed the problem, so we resumed normal conditions later that afternoon.

We look forward to you visiting the hotel in the near future.

Kind regards

Peter.

We booked this hotel as a last minute weekend break. Great price for a family room. Leisure facilities were excellent just a shame the hot tub was off.
We enjoyed our evening meal in the Lakers bar. The food was brilliant. Piping hot and tasty not to mention the very friendly helpful staff. Kids really enjoyed the games room which gave us a bit of time to relax and read. Delicious breakfast topped off a really great night away we would definitely return. Thank you.

Dear Guest

Thank you for the recent feedback about the Castle Inn Hotel. We really go out of our way to ensure that Families are well catered for. Apart from our fantastic leisure facilities including our 15 metre pool. We have a dedicated games room with table tennis, Wii Games on a huge 60inch screen, board games, out-door games, tennis and a putting green! But if the weather is kind we can also recommend a number of easy and hard walks that start from the hotel we also have maps on offer to help!

Thank you once again and we look forward to seeing you again.

We've just returned from a wonderful trip to the Castle Inn. Accommodation, staff, food, everything was perfect.
We had an executive room which was lovely and spacious with comfy beds and a great bathroom. The shower was heavenly! My parents had a standard room but there was nothing standard about it, roomy with a big bathroom.
We ate in the restaurant the first night and it was delicious. A leisurely, tasty meal and we were all catered for, vegetarians and children! Great sized portions of well thought out food. The goats cheese risotto was scrummy!
We ate in the bar the second night and it was equally as good. Left feeling very, very full!!!!!
Breakfast both mornings was perfect, lots of choice. Again, veggies and kids well catered for.
The hotel is very well kept, extremely clean. All public areas were immaculate as were the bedrooms.
The swimming pool was a welcome activity as the weather wasn't great! Lovely big, warm pool!
All the staff were amazing. Really kind and helpful. The assistant manager was very welcoming and addressed my stepfather by name which was a lovely touch. Receptionists, waiters, bar staff...all excellent!
Really can't rate this hotel and it's staff highly enough...can't wait for our next visit!

Stayed here for two nights as a spur of the moment weekend away and after searching the web chose this hotel. I cannot offer more praise for this hotel and highly recommend it to anyone wanting an excellent weekend break. The staff were courteous, knowledgeable and offered a fantastic high level of service on all the occasions I spoke with them.

The double executive room was well equipped with an en-suite which had both a bath and shower in it.

The only downside was that the walls of the room were a little thin and you could hear what your neighbours were getting up to and people returning to the hotel.

Anyone looking for a stay in the Lake District should seriously consider this hotel.

This was a last minute break, booked on the Thursday for Saturday night, so pleased we picked the Castle Inn, we`ve stayed in the Lakes many times, but never in Bassenthwaite, on arrival we were upgraded to an executive room, which was very well appointed, furnished to a high standard, very clean and spacious, we booked a table in the restaurant for evening meal, the attention to detail by the restaurant manager and his staff was second to none, the food was fantastic, the pace of the meal could not have been better, no rushing here, plenty of time inbetween courses, one of the best hotels for food and service I`ve stayed in for quite a while, breakfast was in a similar vein, plenty of options including a good full English.

Room Tip: We were upgraded to an executive room, which was perfect.
