Reviewed 6 April 2010

We have just returned after taking our family to the Castle Inn for an Easter break Friday - Monday which included our parents, son, daughter, their spouses and 3 grandaughters. The hotel and leisure facilities were excellent especially the pool area which was why we had chosen this hotel, our oldest 2 grandaughters 4 and 6 wanted to show their pappap and great grandparents how they could swim. Seeing an 82 year old diving down to recover Zoggs dive sticks with his great grandaughters will stay with me for years. Pool area staff were very helpful and courtious, towels and bags provided only need a £1 coin for lockers which is returned.
The bedrooms were all very comfortable with lovely bathrooms only down side trying to get hot water at the sink, had to wait 5 minutes while running the tap. All the bedrooms had flat screen TVs, the suite could have done with being able to move the TV angle to enable watching it in the lounge area easier.
Bar area was good and had some games for the children to play with, good selection of drinks. Also able to watch the Grand Prix on the big screen early Sunday morning.
Reception staff were very good especially as I had taken some Easter activities/creative crafts for Easter Sunday but had not read the instructions as to what else was required but reception were able to help us out. Thanks girls.
We have been away at Easter before and the hotels have put on Easter activities for both adults and children but apart from the nice gesture of the cream egg on the beds there was only a cinema with DVD's playing 3 times daily set up in one of the conference rooms. A bit dissapointing!
I had phoned after my parents both in their 80's had booked to see if they had a lift due to my mothers mobility issues and was told on the phone they did not but that she was on the ground floor and that there was 3 steps to reception. That was fine she could manage 3 steps but they did not tell us that her room was the furthest away from the reception, bar, lounge and dining room, with long corridors and several steps up and down on the way. When out she uses a wheel chair for any distances but she was determined to walk to these areas as it would have meant getting in and out of her chair on several occasions (an effort in its self), we did have tears some evenings as she did not want to be any trouble to anybody but it was a long way for her, good job the easy chair was at the leisure reception.
Our only other critisism was the service at dinner in the evenings the Friday night was extreemly slow and we were kept waiting for ages even thought the dining room was not very busy when we went in, Saturday was slightly better until the dessert course and Sunday evening was as bad as ever. Thanks must go to Alison who did make sure the children got their meals and desserts. We have been out for meals before as a large party (with even more of the family there) but this was by far the slowest we have ever experienced, especially as there were young children who we tried to amuse so that they did not disturb the rest of the dining room. The food was good but lacked veg (only as an extra) and a little too fancy for older guests (a roast of the day may be a good option) and the childrens menu needs more attention especially for the younger children.
Nice quiet location away from the main tourist areas but within easy reach on the cumbrian road network.
We had a good family weekend but it could have been made even better for the price we paid.
Good luck with your planned further redevelopments.

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at our Hotel. Your kind words regarding the staffs as been passed on and well appreciated. Since your feedback we have extended our range of activities for guests like Mini tennis, crocket and many board games. Regarding your dinner, we always recommend the lounge/bar for a more family oriented meal, It is unfortunate you did not choose this option. We look forward to see your family again.

After being recommended this hotel by a friend we booked the weekday spa package. We very much enjoyed our stay, the staff were lovely, the beautician is a credit to the hotel, and the food was way beyond anything we expected, in fact my partner and I would say we experienced some of the best food we've ever eaten. The spa facilities are great and the rooms and hotel were clean and very functional. However, I personally wouldn't suggest booking the spa break as I think it would work out a little cheaper and less regulated if everything was paid for separately, particularly as I may have wanted to eat in Keswick. Also we were interrupted twice by maintenance men, who briefly knocked before entering our room, which invaded our privacy. Also we were woken up early with the noise of the cleaners one morning. Overall, we had a lovely time even in bad weather.

I have just returned from a weekend at The Castle Inn which started as a business trip on Fri/Sat but I was then joined my my husband and 16 month old child for the Sat/Sun so saw all aspects of the hotel. The location, cleanliness and atmosphere couldn't be faulted. The reception, restaurant and Night Porter staff were extremely friendly and accommodating of every request made. The bar staff were a little more surly on both nights which was a shame because the bar itself is lovely.
We ate 2 breakfasts, 2 dinners and a lunch here and the food was superb every time. Although, as is so often the case nowadays, you do feel ripped off paying £30 for two cooked breakfasts with tea and coffee!
We also made full use of the leisure facilities and, once again, found everything to be family friendly. Towels and wet clothing bags were provided, the pool area was safe and well maintained and there was a baby changer in the ladies' changing room. All making an often fraught changing process much easier.
Our final conclusion was that The Castle Inn is a great place to go with a young family as it is quiet, accessible and friendly if not a little pricey in places. Well worth a visit!

We appreciate your comments regarding the hotel; I have also forwarded your kind words to the Night Porter, an area who is often forgotten. As a family run business we take great pride of providing excellent service and your review as been shared to all departments within the Castle Inn. We look forward to see you back.

We have just returned from a lovely trip to the Lake District. The Castle Inn Hotel was our choice and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, particularly the food, although there were a few niggles.

My husband was looking forward to sampling some local ales/bitters but imagine his disappointment to be told that the Skiddaw bitter was finished and there was no more, this being at approx, 7.00 p.m. on the Friday night. Plenty of other run of the mill beer/lager but that's not the point.

Our room was lovely,in fact it was two rooms really. One with two single beds, our daughter claimed this room, and another entered through the first room with a double bed. No view but that did not matter to us as we were out and about a lot. No hot water from our shower though on either day, apparently a problem with the plumbing. However we were asked if we wanted to use the showers in the leisure centre. There was a bath though and although the water was gurgling we did get hot water in the bath.

Great swimming pool and extremely pleasant service from the attendant.
We found that all the staff in the hotel were very helpful, friendly and approachable.

We had booked bed, breakfast and evening meal and enjoyed the food immensely, great choice and very well cooked. The service on the Friday night was extremely slow though, so much so that we didn't bother to order a sweet, everything took so long. On the Saturday night the service was very efficient.

I would have preferred a real fire in the bar/lounge rather than the gas fire but that is just personal preference.

Great comments about our food; our team in the kitchen were extremely happy to hear your feedback. Cask Ale beer have such a limited shelve life and it could be a problem in the slower times. However we have now talked to our local micro-brewery and are supplied with smaller cask, therefore have a bigger turnover. We hope to see you again, and sample some local Cask Ale.

My friends and I have just spent a lovely day at The Sanctuary Spa at The Castle Inn. The spa day package consisted of 2 30 minute treatments, a 3 course lunch with 1 free soft drink and full use of the spa area (swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room) and at £55 I couldn't complain at all. We arrived at 10am (maybe a little later due to a road diversion caused by the recent floods) we were handed robes and towels and went off to the swimming pool. The beauty therapists were brilliant, they gave us an itinary so 2 girls would go off for a treatment while the other 5 stayed in the spa/pool. In the afternoon there was only 1 therapist available due to a therapist leaving a couple of weeks earlier but this was not a problem as the therapist stayed late and did our afternoon treatments back to back. Our treatments consisted of facial, manicure, pedicure, back neck & shoulder massage and indian head massage. All the treatments were really good - the french manicure really nicely done. The food was very good especially for the price but alcoholic drinks quite expensive so check the menu before ordering. All the staff were lovely and I would definitely recommend a spa day - prices start at £35. Unfortunately we didn't stay over night so I can't comment on the rooms.

When I arrived at the hotel my heart sank as I hadn’t realised it was Best Western. Normally this hotel chain seem to go out of their way to recruit surly unhelpful staff…. This was NOT the case with the Castle… they even emailed us in advance to let us know about bridge closures….
The rooms are huge & clean, facilities well maintained, food excellent & staff couldn’t be more helpful & they understand the importance of speed on check out…
The manager of this place needs to give him/herself a huge pat on the back for raising expectations for Best Western…. Very well done all of you, I really hope to come back again.

Dear Guest

Thank you for your kind words. Our team work very hard to ensure all of our guests leave very happy, we are an independent family owned hotel and are involved with the Best Western brand. I am sorry your previous experience of Best Western hasn't been a positive one. We look forward to seeing you again in the near future. Kind regards, Peter Wells.

This Christmas break was all the promotional information promised it would be.
Checking in was a breeze with pleasant and efficient staff. We were offered help with our luggage.
Our room looked over the front of the hotel with views of Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding peaks. Truly picture postcard stuff with the recent snow.
Our accommodation consisted of a large bedroom with adjoining shower suite and a small sitting room.
Everything was spotless and there was a welcome letter and updated information for our stay.
We ate in the restaurant for all our meals and there was a good variety of choice. Restaurant staff were attentive without being intrusive and service was at a good pace. The hotel states it uses local produce where possible and this was evident in the menu.
The food was excellent. Hot courses were hot, cold courses cold, and the iced items clearly straight from the freezer! The cheese selection was a dream come true, with local cheeses, but be warned - the serving is plentiful.
Portions were a good size, suffice it to say that we couldn't attempt the Christmas Day evening buffet, we had been so well fed at lunchtime.
And chef! - the terrines were to die for and can I have the recipe for your home made piccalilli?
Front of house staff were ready with information, and let us know what was going on each day. We never felt under any pressure to do other than what WE wanted.
Good bar staff meant little waiting even when the bar was busy, and there were plenty of smiles and chat. Bar Prices were what you'd expect to pay in an hotel. The wine list is extensive and offered something for everyone. I found the house Rioja an excellent choice.
We had taken this break to have a totally chilled out Christmas and we achieved just that.
We couldn't fault this hotel from arrival to departure.
